New 993 - a few questions for the experienced

Hi all

You may recall that I posted recently regarding a 993 I've purchased. I have the car at home now and I'm fairly comfortable that it's an honest and sound purchase for the money. I do have a few questions for the 993 fraternity though, if you wouldn't mind me picking your brains a little.

i) Slightly "sticky" gear selection: When warm, the lever seems (from time to time - not always by any means) to be a little reluctant to come out of gear (can be any of 2, 3, 4 or 5) even with the clutch fully depressed. I cannot see anything to suggest that the transmission oil has been changed recently (perhaps ever) so is this a likely cause or is there something else to investigate?

If it's oil, are there any brands/specifications which are particularly recommended?

ii) Are there any highly recommended bodyshops for the windscreen/A pillar corrosion repair job, preferably not too far from Essex?

iii) My rear spoiler trim (i.e. the bit in the middle with the grill) stands a little proud of the spoiler - are there any recognised fixes for this?

iv) I suspect the dampers are a little weak. Again, there's nothing to suggest they've been changed over the life of the car (66,000 miles) so they're likely to be past their best. Thoughts regarding replacements and suppliers would be welcomed.

No doubt I'll have a few more questions as the investigation progresses but I'd be grateful for any input on the above.

regards
Nick

You could do alot worse than contact Clark and Carter who carry out alot of work both mechanical and bodywork for Paul Stephens. They are based in Cressing which is between Chelmsford and Colchester. The way they prepared my car was amazing and have dealt with some mechanical issues too. They have my 993 now which I'm collecting this weekend. Take a look at the website and call and ask for Steve Clark. Pls mention me as he has my car at present and that I'd recommended him. Top

Agreed. I've used C&C for my 944 and they did a good job with that. I suppose the thrust of my question is to see if there are other bodyshops that also provide this service so I can get some comparitive quotations.

If it's on the original Monro dampers these were only good for 20,000 miles and would be well past their best by now. There are many posts on here and other forums regarding damper choice - I personally went with the Bilstein HD's, which have served me well for the last 8 years and 70,000 miles.

Are you sure it's the dampers ? There are many other components that can wear in the complex 993 suspension system. I would suggest a thorough health check from a recognised specialist who can advise what if anything needs replacing, rather that replacing individual components piecemeal.
