New 993 owner- a couple of questions

Hello all,

This is my first post on this forum as I've just bought a 1995 993 c2, which I have to say I'm delighted with. The car is in excellent condition, and has done 80k miles. I got it cheaply as it needs some work to the brakes and new wishbones, but otherwise the PPI stated it seems very straight. I've had it for 2 days now, and have a couple of questions I hope someone more knowledgeable than myself can answer!

Firstly, I parked it up in the garage today and when I went to get it out again found a puddle of water around the passenger side front wheel. I looked under the car and it seems that what I think is water is dripping down from under the front bumper. Is this normal? The car has no a/c, so it's not that. Is there a drain channel exiting there or something like that? The car runs perfectly, no warning lights on etc.

Secondly, when the car is cold the gearbox makes a 'thunk' sound when you change from first to second. It's fine going from third to second, and it improves considerably when the car is warm. Is this a synchromesh problem, or something less financially crippling?! Any suggestions to improve this would be gratefully received.

If anyone can shed any light on the above I'd be very grateful

Regards

Keith

Hi,

I had the same issue with the puddle under the front passenger wheel - never actually found the cause - I think I have /had a leak from the Windscreen / Headlight washer system (my Windscreen pump failed recently and was replaced)

How full is your windscreen wash bottle?

Not sure about the gearchange - my change is OK with no noticable noises

Also check the front luggage compartment for water - remove carpet/spare wheel etc. There are some drain holes to allow water out which may be cause.

Regarding gearbox - mine has done 160k miles and is still ok - many have changed the oil to swepco brand with good results - try a search.

silly question but was it raining before (or sometime before) you parked the car? I've seen bits of water around the edges of the car even after a light shower...there are drainage holes at the front of the car.

re the gearbox - every 993 I've had is like that, I just change very slowly from first to second until it's warm then all is ok.

Hello, thanks for your replies

I've had a poke about under the car and I suspect the water leak is from the headlight washer system, as suggested. I'll get it sorted out when the front PU comes off to be resprayed soon

I'm going to try changing the gearbox oil to see if that improves the shift - if it doesn't who would you recommend to rebuild the box at a reasonable price? JZM suggest it will cost around ÂŁ3k to sort out if the syncros are gone which is a bit lively given that I'm flat broke after buying the car!

Regards

Keith

As Kenny said, treat it carefully when cold (they warm up quickly enough) - they're always a bit like that when cold - just like the old 911s too, but don't go racing into a rebuild that you say you can't afford, if it probably doesn't need it!

Yeah be careful with any rebuilds Keith, you might not get the results you're after.

Replacing the oil should help matters if it's not in a good state but I doubt whether it will make the graunching dissappear.

I don't know where you are, but Tony Wright at Wrightune in Wallingford (oxon) is very good at gearbox rebuilds, and one of the cheapest labour rates around. (01491) 826911. I have to confess an affiliation, as we have been mates for over 35 years.

I second Tony Wright - and I've no particular bias. He sorted my 993 when I bought it in '05 and he's offered a very good service since then. Michael

I personally wouldn't contemplate a gearbox rebuild just becasue there is a thunk when cold. Mine does it when very cold.

Definitely worth changing the gearbox oil though.

I had exact same water issue on my 1994, 993. If you remove the wheel and the wheel liner which is a very simple process, you will find the washer tube running through the wheel arch. Mine had a little "T" piece inserted in it and something had come out of one of the ways which let the water drip out. I plugged this up 2 years ago and not a problem since and the washers for windows and lights work fine.

I agree - deffo washer system in my view. There is a drain plug at the bottom of the bottle on my 964 which leaked.

Also, they can also leak if overfilled - through the breather hose at the top. Hopefully it's something as simple as that, as it's a sod to get at.

Best advice - give the headlights a good squirt and hope the problem goes away when the level drops !

Hi

Thats usefull knowledge - that sounds like the problem with mine - it leaked a bit, then stopped, and the problem has not reappeared

Cheers

Hallo Keith, my C4 balks first time when cold going from 1st to 2nd, I found, which may only particular to my car that moving from first to the neutral position then a dog leg movement (away from the driver) into second, slots straight in every time, the gears all go in after that and as said earlier gets better as it warms up which is quite quickly, mines done 98K miles.

That's exactly what I do, and always have done on 993's - works a treat. Then when it's warm you can flick through the gears as fast as you want! Personally I like the way the car wants to be caresssed until it's warm - personality!

My C2 does the same (64k) and she's a joy to caress and soon she's silky smooth. The car is simply awesome. Pedigree or what.

As above for my 993. Much-improved once properly warm. My specialist said it was completely normal, just the way the 911 gearbox is. Anyway, I'm not into 0-60 standing starts so it doesn't bother me. 30-70...that's a different matter!
