New 993 owner....hopefully!

Hi all,
I'm hopefully just about to dip my toes into the world of the 993 having owned and much enjoyed a 3.2 Carrera for the last ten years!
I've been looking at a '96 993 C2 which has just tipped over the 100k mark and is in generally fine fettle, however there are one of two niggles that I'm haggling over:
1) The front screen has got the creaks, there appears to be no corrosion visible around the seal. Is there anywhere else any cossosion issues show themselves in this area? I've heard mention of a PTFE tape being used to cure the creak, does anybody have any experience of this or is it a windscreen out job to fully sort..... our should I just live with it?!!
2) Leaking cam cover on one side which the dealer said he would fix. Are these normally available and changed as a pair?
3) The trim seals at the top of the wings have hardned and slightly cracked, are these easily changed?
4) The trim seal between the front wings and PU has dislocated, again, is this easy to re-fit?
5) Most improtantly, on the test drive, the car didn't feel as planted through the bends as I remember other 993's that I've driven to be. The car is fitted with M033 and I've got a sneaky feeling that the front shocks are dead, over rough surfaces the steering wheel was very fidgety and on smooth surfaces I really didn't feel that confident throwing it in to the corners. When stationary, the front of the car can be pushed down about 2-3 inches, is this to be expected? Without removal of the units, are there any easy ways to assess their condition? Is replacement an easy DIY job, what sort of costs are new dampers? Is it a DIY job, I've done quite a lot on the 3.2 and I'm fairly confident with a spanner? ... Obviously I'm looking to negotiate this into the deal, but its good to know the options in advance!

Sorry for the lengthy tome.

Thanks,
Phil

It's my old car. Give me a ring on 01400 261003 for details. The front dampers do need replacing.

Cheers.

The POWER of a forum when it's used right!

Great choice of next Porsche. [:D]

Sounds like John will give you all the details you need!

On Item 1 in your list, Yes the PTFE tape idea is a windscreen out job and is not certain to fix it.
However, an easier solution is here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=285330

(Any anyway you quickly grow to live with it even if you don't do that!)

On Item 3 there is a thread somewhere on here, but in summary it's a tough job - a lot of work to get enough gap to get the new ones in.

Gents,
Thanks for the advice and pointers so far, and of course to John for some invaluable background knowledge on the car.

I hope by Tuesday night to have done a deal.....fingers crossed!

Phil

Hi Phil

On Point 2, the leaking cam covers are a common issue - covers are plastic, bolts are aluminium, last bill for repair from my indy was about ÂŁ90 or so to replace them

Did the same upgrade myself and it was well worth it [:)]

Thanks Pete, if I remember correctly, wasn't your upgrade enforced?

Unfortunately yes...[]

Although it all came good in the end - I got the 993, and the 3.2 was repaired and sold back to Germany

You looking to take the new 993 to Le Mans this year?

Pete

Phil, should you not get the deal done - I have a nice 95 C2 manual, blue/blue on 72k miles - in superb order. If interested call 07970 225403 - can give you all the details - looking to move to C2S. Chris.

Well, the deal is done and I'm the proud owner of a 993, I've just got to wait till next week to pick it up.........Can't wait!

Thanks for the info Chris, had it been a straight cash deal I'd have been in touch. Good luck with the upgrade to a C2S.

Wow, that really looks the business. What's the ride like on those big boots?
If you've not been to Le Mans you ought to give it a go, its a fantastic weekend, although don't expect to feel refreshed and ready for work when you get home!

The ride on the 19s with a newer uprated suspension is excellent. Not harsh, turn is great and taking corners at speed seems to improve the road holding. Then it is a C4.

Cheers!
