New 996 owner with indicator stalk problem

Hi guys

Picked up my C4 on Tuesday and on the way home from work today the indicator stalk decided not to cancel after turning a right hand corner. In my infinite wisdom I flicked it back to the central position by hand. Sorted. The next time I needed to use it for the same direction corner it wouldn't stay in the 'on' position and cancels automatically. The other direction is fine. Have I broken it or is this a common fault?

Thanks in advance for any tips. And don't say "only go round left hand corners" please. [;)]

Cheers
Martin

Not too uncommon, I'm afraid. I've never heard of an easy fix, and you are most likely going to have to change the whole stalk unit. If you haven't got obc and cruise control, it might be worth thinking about retrofitting it, as the 4-stalk units are cheaper than the 2-stalk ones, and you would only need about £10's worth of additional bits.

Having said that, John Barnatt (924nutter) did find a cheaper way of getting a 2/3 stalk unit when his broke, so it would be worth searching his past posts on the subject.

The obc stalk screwed on to the stalk unit, so if you got a 2-stalk, you could swap it over. Or you could buy a 4-stalk, and cut off the cruise stalk, or connect it up to add the feature.

I bought the 4-stalk even though my car was not/will not be fitted with the scourge of intelligent motoring ie cruise control. Do not throw away the old unti until you have recovered the facing bits - you'll know what I mean when you compare the old and the new.

Plenty of youtube clips on the step-by-step process.

Oh yes, re-engaging the air bag retaining bolts can be a pain.

Buy the 2 switch stalk. I got mine from OPC for under £100 but I think in my thread on the subject was it design 911 said he could undercut that. Follow Richard's Instruction and carefully remove the clockspring taking care not to rotate any part of it and set it aside. Then unscrew your obc stalk from you broken stalk, and fit it to your new one. Two problems, you need a good qualiy TX 30 "L" wrench to loosen the two air-bag screws, they go with quite a snap and I had the added inconvenience of having to peel off the grey leather trim and attaching it to the new stalks

Thanks for all the info guys. Will order a 2 stalk switch and make sure I've got all the tools needed before I attempt replacement. [8|]
