New 997 rxhaust rattle from cold

Guest

From collecting the car new I'm getting a strong rattle from what sounds
like the exhaust box, only when cold. Problem goes away completely after
moving off for 50 yards and only returns after the engine has completely
cooled again

Dealer told me this was a known anomoly and nothing to worry about, but
could not explain it further

Anyone seen this already and know what this is

Thanks

Hi

I have experienced the same on my 997 cab delivered April 2005. Have now done 4500 miles , 2500 on a recent 2 week trip to the South of France. Had no problems whatsoever and the rattle only occured when engine cold. I have not mentioned this to Porsche as I did not think it a problem. Car behaved impeccably and got lots of admiring glances. Not too many 997 in France yet and did not see one 997 cab.

It is difficult to argue when an OPC claims it is a known anomaly. Tell them to give you this in writing, possibly an official letter from Porsche AG. If not write directly to Porsche AG naming the OPC with the claim they have made.

Rattle near exhaust would most likely be the heat shield/plate and when the system warms up it probably all falls in place but a heat shield should never expand or contract so much to cause a rattle. However having said that heat shield rattles are usually down to screws or holdings coming loose with age not on a new car!

The exhaust note when cold sounds like there is a rattle in mine also but it is normal and I think it sounds good especially when you blip the throttle a few times

I too have a small metallic rattle in the exhaust hot & cold, it did comliment the others I had, so didn't bother that much. Did speak to OPC, and he looked at me and said that was part of the noise my car made, don't be concearned...bless him[;)]

Yes, mine is the same. OPC told me that rattle is not normal and would investigate when car is in next. A freinds new car has no rattle when cold and has is in fact a noticably quieter exhaust note?
By the way, I have the standard system, not sports.

My car also makes differrent noises when 1st started but I thought it was an internal gate/flap for cold start/lower emissions/faster warm up?

Yes, same rattle on mine. Metallic noise on cold tickover. Off to my OPC tonight for a free BBQ so will ask the Dealer Principal for his comment.

Hi guys,
As promised I'm reporting back after last weeks club night at my OPC in Exeter. Spoke to the dealer principle who took me to meet their 997 Technical guru. He absolutely assured me that the metallic rattle I experienced especially when starting from cold was absolutely normal and related to the way the exhaust was designed. He actually said it was there on tickover and was to do with the vacum (if thats how you spell it). Its more noticible if you stand outside the car.
I wasnt going to argue as he was a big lad but his knowledge of Porsches and their different foibles left me highly impressed. PS thank you Exeter your service is second to none as always.
Cheers

Thanks for the feedback.

Did you ask why, if it was "normal", it does not occur on all cars

Did you by any chance ask for an explicit technical description. What you have kindly fed back sounds like after sales BS once again

I think you got flatterred a bit at the club night

Yes, I did get a full technical explanation on precisely what cased the noise. But without a pen and paper or tape recorder to review it, I thought it better not to give out wrong info. We have a 944 s2 as well and even though we dont get it serviced with the Exeter OPC they have given us heaps of advice (and again last week) for no charge.
I dont think it was a fob off as the explanation was very detailed. Obviously everyones ear is tuned differently but they also offered to listen to the car if I wasnt happy. Actually their guru was head of their technical department and the reasons he gave were very comprehensive and he didnt have to think twice about it answering the query . I am no boffin but everything made sense and anyway I quite like the noise it reminds me of my old 911T (still think water cooled is best though)
Cheers

I just got a call offering to take it in and listen and give me the confidence its OK. However their chief engineer told me he jad never heard of this problem before...which I guess is why I reached this credibility issue to start with

I'll let you know how it plays out
