New 998 = End of the 911?

I can't find the picture from this months 'Car' magazine but this is pretty much it. I almost shed a tear when I saw the cad rendering of the new 998. Forget the lovely 'art ups' that disguise it and make it look low/wide, if this is the real face of the new 998 with its lifted front to meet pedestrian safety laws then for me that's the end of the 911. Call it a 911 for marketing reasons maybe but the 911 shape, the essence of the beast always recognisable in your mirror as a 911 is gone[:(] sad day. Say it isn't true.

Seems to have finally morphed into a VW Beetle after all those years of jibes to that effect. Of course some might say that the true 911 lineage ended a long time ago...

If the leaks are to be believed there will be more change to the interior than the exterior.

Panic not,it will be awsome,997 is a fantastic car i bet the new one will be even better[:)]
 
I have no doubt it will be a great car but ppl always forget that the 911 ended production 20 or so years ago, so saying the next carrera variant is the end of the 911 is a bit odd when you think about it.

IMHO the nicest and most exciting looking mockup pictures have been the ones of the new 928.

I was in Vegas for a tradehow end of September and we were stood on the sidewalk on the strip waiting to cross when a guy next us to goes "Look a four-door porsch, I didnt even know they made those" (Panamera) it was followed by another then another, all 4S badged.
 
I wondered a while ago what the pedestrian safety criteria might mean the front of the 911 having to develop in to. Imagine it having to have the same height, and all the under-bonnet safety paraphenalia, as a Passat....[:eek:]
 
Look on the bright side, the cost of 997s will drop to more affordable levels once the new 911 is launched. [:)]
 
I think a black 997 gt3 could be 'almost' as tempting as a 993 turbo if they were both the same price.. which by the time I leave uni in 3 years they might be. Hmmm

I cant stand the offset pedals, the cramped footwell and the need for pixie feet in RHD derivatives

I have infinite respect for the 997 turbo, getting out of an F430 spider and straight into the 997 made me realise the true scale of what an awesome machine it is but in the same way that I wouldn't own a GTR, it's not the car for me.

Gordon I forgot you'd had a 993TT, what mileage was that one at and did you have any troubles with it? What were the main costs in running it. Clutch?
 
I actually quite like the image of the car at the top of the thread - quite like the Panamera, which I think has a pretty front end, so this could be the first 911 I would call pretty.

I'm surprised the front of the 911 is particularly affected by the pedestrian rules with the engine being in the back - isn't it the distance between the top of the engine and the bonnet that is the issue? Seems pointless to regulate against the height of the front as how do you know that if you were going to run someone over if they are going to be a tall adult, short adult or shorter child??

All it needed was servicing a new MAF and an air con condensor in the 3 years I had it. No issues with the clutch even when I upgraded the ECU and it was pumping 500lbs of torque out at 4000rpm, you should plan on replacing every 40k. so it was no more expensive than any other Porsche I had. The hidden cost though of the 993TT is the upgrades!!!

The 944 Turbo cost as much initially as the 993TT !!
 
These pedestrian safety rules are making all cars look the same.
Look at the similarity in shape between the 'new' Porsche 998 (or is it 991?) and my daily driver:

Superb and you confirm as I expected. The 993TT is still of the 'built properly rather than efficiently' era. Many thanks for the info

I cant have one right now, would be totally ridiculous but I cant stop myself looking every now and then and I've just seen a 993tt come up which is exactly what I want. Black with black, front chin spoiler, standard rear spoiler and slightly modified engine.

I cannot think of any man made object, art or otherwise that is more pleasing to my eye. Yet compared to your average Picasso its a steal!!
