"New" alarm

When I bought my 993 I was told it had an immobiliser but no alarm. It's the little fob that slots into the dashboard with a sticker saying "Porsche immobiliser". There was a silver certificate card saying about as much (though it had the part number) but Adrian Flux lost that for me. I've had the car 2½ years.

So I was somewhat surprised when last night, I'd locked it with the passenger door open, shut the door and an alarm went off. I unlocked and locked it with the door key and the alarm shut off.

It's a very loud intermittent horn coming from passenger side rear of the car. I can't see anything in the boot but that's not surprising - you can't see much in there!

There's no visible detectors inside the car, and it's not gone off in 2½years. It doesn't go off if you open the door and sit inside but don't immobilise it, so I guess it's doorkey activated.

As there's no fob or anything I am guessing it's manufacturers standard.

Can anyone shed any light on what this alarm is? WIll be handy for the insurance

Have a word with hamilton and Palmer. they'll be able to tell you what it is and how it works providing it's standard Porsche issue.

Johnny,

How did you get on with this? Did you consult / use H&P in the end? I've got a couple of old-looking key fobs, and instinct tells me it might be time to replace (clone?) one or both of them soon, before I'm stranded ...

H&P (contact details in the suppliers list at top of 993 forum list) are very helpful. Phone and you get direct to someone who knows exactly what they are talking about.

Fully agree re. Hamilton and Palmer. They provided me with a new "receptacle" ( the bit the fob goes in to ) - and a new fob for which I had the code, by return of post - cost was £45 for each I think.

They know exactly what they are talking about.

I finally spoke to them today. The chap at H&P who knows about Porsches only works Tuesdays and Thursdays (lucky chap).

He said the alarm on it is totally independent of the immobiliser. It's Porsche fitted, and works when the car has been locked with a door open and the open door is closed. It only works on the doors, so I think that means the boot and bonnet don't set it off; that's what I expected as I often lock the car then close the boot/bonnet afterwards and the alarm hasn't gone off then. It may work in other ways but he didn't say, he only knows about the immobiliser.

Shame, it would have reduced my insurance a bit!
