New battery - make / model?

So, I thought I'd give my 944 her pre-winter service and checkover.

All went well, and I was feeling fairly smug - no stripped screw heads on the air box, spark plugs beautifully simple to change, washer jet nozzles adjusted just so... Then I went to start her up for a spin to warm the oil before changing that. And she would barely turn over. ****. It seems my battery is flat. Not entirely surprising, as it is a good age battery (10 years or more) and it's getting cold here. (A multimeter says the battery is putting out 11.68 volts, which doesn't seem too low, but I suppose that's with no load on it...) Anyway, I think I need a new battery. The battery in there is type 067, 66AH and 530A SAE. As this battery has served me so well, I assume the same again would be appropriate. Any recommendations on make? I've been fitting Exide Premium batteries recently (after a recommendation for another make of car), and they seem to have done well. CP4L suggest an 075 battery for my car, rather than a 067. Is the 075 possibly a modern replacement for the older 067s? Will go and measure to check the size is the same.

Is battery replacement a simple job? I can only see one clamp holding the battery down, though the bolt head looks to have a strange fitment. Also, might my immobiliser cause problems after the battery is disconnected and the new one connected? (Aftermarket immobiliser, Autowatch PPI with the little key ring transponder to touch to the sensor in the car).

Many thanks for any suggestions.

11.68V is a good indication that the battery has had it. You really want to be seeing a minimum of 12.50V as a basic indication of healthiness.

An 075 is the wrong battery in my opinion. If you go for an 096TE in Exide speak you get something like 700CCA which should crank an oil tanker and you get higher capacity into the bargain.

I've mentioned on here before that the 944 battery is a bit of an oddball in that it is what the industry calls an LB3 (175mm tall) whereas the the LO3 (190mm tall) is far more common. The good news is that the main OEM user of LB3 batteries are Ford and that means that there is quite a lot of development going on in that box size to support Ford's stop/start expansion. I would expect to see some very high specification LB3 Ford batteries filtering through to the aftermarket within months rather than years.

Thanks monkey. The 075 is what the various car parts sites suggest based on car model. And some of them do have 660 CCA or thereabouts, so I'd go for a high spec one. Not sure I can wait a few months for higher spec batteries to filter through, I need one in the next week or so! Cheers.

My battery died on start up on Saturday, I knew it was on the way out so today after doing a quick internet check, I opted on my local Merityre.

Yuasa 5100 BYBX 75 Ah 680 CCA with 5 year warrantee. It's also an LB3 which slightly smaller than the Exide I had in previously which was a really tight fit. I stood over the guy and helped him prise it out for fear of damaging the immobiliser. I had to take the cover off it exposing all the components to get access to the securing bolt []

Job done, starts on a couple of turns, hopefully that'll be good for the winter. Lights seem to be brighter as well [:)]

Oh, price.......£89.93 fitted with 5 year guarantee which I think appears favourable compared to similarly specced alternatives.

Not much help now but Eurocarparts were doing some good prices on Bosch and other makes recently. Worth signing up to their newsletter for discount codes.

Had a quick check out of interest again on ECP and even with the 10% discount promo code on the home page, they were still slightly dearer than I paid for the nearest Bosch spec. However, if you check the Carparts4less site, the same battery would have been £5 cheaper with their promo code than I paid.

In this instance, I was happy to pay a fiver more to have it fitted same day(and not have to take the old one for recycling).

Tony....good tip to sign up for newsletter.....maybe useful when it comes to buying brakes/ discs and the like in future.
