New battery on my 2008 997 C4S Cab

I need to replace the battery on my 2008 C4S Cabriolet. I don't really want to pay main dealer prices for this. Can anyone advise what battery I need (650 amp?) and whether I can purchase something suitable from the likes of halfords? Thank you

Morning Clive,
I think the general preception is, if you're not concerned about extended warranty, fit a Bosche replacement - S4 or S5 is your best bet.
You can get plenty of information on these and even purchase online if you wish. There's also some info on fitting it yourself in the technical section of our forum. [:)]
Regards,
Clive.

i have an extended warranty and needed the battery replacing this year on a Saturday night. I had Porsche agree that i could fit any battery and that if the battery failed it wasn't covered by warranty, but the rest of the car was still covered (I made them write it down in their notes and read back to me what they'd put in). The Porsche Assist (AA) bloke took me to Midnight Motors in Wembley to get the replacement and fit it (it was £105 and was rated as per the Porsche battery and it came with a 5 year warranty). His opinion FWIW was that the Halfords batteries were not as good.

One helpful thing he did was connect his jump battery into the diagnostic port so when he swapped the battery, it didn't wipe the radio code etc.

Personally, I couldn't be comfortable with that. The extended warranty is with an insurer, not the Porsche Centre, so if the contract states you must fit OM parts, you are in breach if you don't comply, which leaves a possible channel open to refute a future claim. It may not happen, but why pay a substantial money for the insurance, then run the risk of voiding it just to save a few quid on a part?
Regards,
Clive.

Thanks Clive, Rodney. I do wish to maintain the (extended) warranty so will stick with a Porsche approved part.

Thanks all for your comments And help.

i understand the concerns, but the agreement I made was with Porsche Assist who were on the telephone at the time (not the Porsche centre - sorry for not making that point clear) - if Porsche Assist have made an agreement and a commitment, then they themselves are accountable, further; their representative (AA bloke) installed it, so it wasn't a case of me cutting corners and trying to do everything myself.

I use my car daily, and having no battery on a Saturday night was really a problem. Does anyone supply Porsche batteries outside of normal working hours?

On the battery topic, I may be moving away from the original post, but has anyone had issues with the alternator on the 997 generally? My battery is one year old, but not any particular make....

I ask because I use my 10 yr old Gen 1 on runs to and from where my daughters are at Uni, which means the car does decent mileage and little stop/start.... I find that it takes the trickle charge at least 24 hours before it moves from amber (not 100% charged) to green/full charge... Surely that can't be right?! My 993 was never like that... So the question is; do i have an incorrect battery... or is there an issue with the alternator producing enough current during motorway mileage?

Apologies if this is a daft question, but any views would be appreciated... Thank you!

Ctek provides a very light charge to replenish the juice drawn from central locking and other electronic functions that continue after the engine is switched off. It then pulses intermittently between maintenance (amber) and fully charged cycles (green). It may be you've just observed it during its maintenance mode. Older batteries often stay amber and never reach the green, fully charged state. Your local indy or PC should be able to test your alternator if you're concerned.
Regards,
Clive.

Yuasa from Halfords. Would probably have bought online but battery failed and I needed a replacement in a hurry.

Way better than Porsche OEM battery. Porsche batteries are absolute rubbish. I bought my car 2nd hnd from PC. Original battery failed 6 months after purchase. Replacement lasted 14 months and I replaced with Yuasa; yes I may have got another warrantly replacement but OPC keep car a week to prove battery is duff.

I have given up with Porsche warranty as having spent 4k at last service on parts (shocks, disks, replacement exhaust mountings, and the list goes on) not covered by the warranty I cannot see the point of it.

Porsche batterys (Moll) are rubbish.
Having said that, on my previous Porsche the Moll lasted the entire time I owned it (7years) and who knows how long previously. Always on trickle charge, and I topped up the battery cell water once a year. So maybe they just need pampering to get the best out of them?

You might see the point of the warranty if the PDK goes bang. Interestingly my "rubbish" Porsche OEM battery is nearly 6 years old - probably the kiss if death!

I replaced 997.1 2S batt about a year ago. My car had a MOLL and since my purchase of car almost 4 years ago, it always seemed like it only just had enough oomph to start car (horrible hot starting on occasion). Fair bit of research done I went for a Bosch silver plus, 800A. I forget exact detail now ,but it also has higher cranking amps than the previous model. £100 from euro car parts - easy fit myself and it has 5 year unlimited mileage warranty, pretty decent I thought. Car has started way better since. Car used infrequently at this time of year (4k miles/yr), so garaged on a battery conditioner.
Standard drain tube transfered over.
