New Boxster Launch

I attended the 981 launch at Nottingham last night. Having read a number of press rave reviews, particularly Andrew Frankel in Motor Sport, I was really looking forward to seeing the new car, I came away rather disappointed. From a subjective view point I am not convinced about the new shape, in some areas it is too fussy for my taste. I like the realignment of the windscreen and shape of the hood, the use of which is improved by removing the catch. The revised air vents on the fascia look cheap and nasty to me and will probably reflect badly in bright sunshine, should we ever have any ! Porsche have previous with dashboard reflections from the Sport chrono on the 987 /997. I suspect that my reservations about the looks will diminish as they normally do, time will tell.
From an objective point of view my major criticism is the reduction in size of the rear boot, not only has the volume been reduced but critically so has the opening. I was just able to place an empty (Porsche) golf bag in the boot, a bag of clubs will be a different matter and two bags appears to be impossible. As my Boxster is my only car practicality is a key consideration which is one of the reasons that I have been running Boxsters for ten years. The fact that the new one is both longer and wider is also not an advantage, the size of my garage is fixed.
I have booked a test drive when I intend to review my concerns. Will I buy a 981 Boxster? - I don't know.
I like the reports of improved performance and driving dynamics, but which I don't really need, I do need the practicality which my 987 provides.
A final thought (rant) how can Porsche continue to charge over £200 extra for a vital bit of kit on a roadster, the draught excluder.
I am now looking forward to the launch of the Jaguar F type and yes I know it is even bigger !

I'll have a look (in the wind and rain) at Silverstone on Sunday but this is a thouroughly depressing outline because I can't get anything bigger than the 987 in our garage so thats me stuffed as far as the new one is concerned. Moving house or building a bigger garage are both out of the question just now. Never mind I'm sure Porsche will have at least 2 more customers with bigger garages lined up to take my place. The Boxster was a perfect compromise. We took ours down to the South of France for a week last year and there was plenty of space for us, the bags etc etc so why on the one hand make the car bigger and on the other the boot smaller? Bizarre! That said all car manufacturers all seem to be hell bent upon "pumping up" the size of new models and there is a long history of it happening. I could get the wife's peugeot 206 in the garage (and get out of it) but when she got the 207 the only way you could escape was via the hatcback. See, you are not the only one who can rant.

981 is no wider than 987, and 32mm longer.

the boot capacity for 981 is 130 litres, just like the 987.

front boot on 981 is 150 litres, 987 is 130 litres.

Lamboman has done his homework and is 100% correct. Personally as a 6 time Boxster owner I came away from the launch mightily impressed and convinced many a 991 3.4 Cabrio potential owner who doesn.t need the rear chairs would be buying a much better handling and looking car if they went for the new 981 which no longer shares it's doors with the 911's [:D]

Watch this video if anyone has the slightest doubts about the 981 and then go for a test drive before making any final decisions

I also attended the 981 preview at my local OPC last evening, but sadly all the display cars were Boxster S heavily loaded with extras. I wanted to see a 2.7, 19" wheels and standard seats - but instead we were shown a massively over spec'd S costing more than £62K! Apart from the grey one the colours were rather odd: snot green and garish blue - just what you need to make an informed choice!

I was told that there would be no 2.7s delivered in the UK before June as production would not begin until the week beginning 21st May. So if you want to see and drive before you order it could be a long wait.
