New Boxster Owner - a few questions

Great forum!

After a 4 year break I have decided to buy my 3rd Boxster. The kids can just walk from now on, I don't care, they could do with the exercise. I've had enough of their constant bickering in the back of a bland lump of metal. Back to enjoyment again.

Just bought a 2001 2.7 in black/savanna with 85k miles on. Full service history. I've got a few questions you may be able to help me with...

The car was last serviced 4k ago last June. Should I just get an oil change done this year and wait for it to hit the next service due in the book?

Does anyone have prices on how much it costs to get the bodywork highly polished and protected?

Welcome back! [8D]

What service did it have last time? Did it have the oil done then?

If so then the "Annual Check" should be fine.

Hi Mark, Just signed up for the Membership so should be able to supply you with a membership number in 14 days or so.

The stamp is ticked as 'full service' I think. I haven't got the book with me so I'll have to check it out.

This car will probably only do a few thousand miles a year. Hopefully with quite a high mileage and good OPC history the gremlins like the rear oil seal should be sorted if it ever had that problem. My 2 previous 2.5l cars both had that problem.

If the car just needs an annual check, how much does it cost roughly? I'm still not sure whether to use an OPC for the servicing or an independent specialist. Last time I used the OPC in Liverpool and they damaged my car (scratched all the way down one side against a pillar in the servicing bay), the repair was awful (paint left on the steering wheel by the paint shop amongst other things) so I've sort of been put off a bit! But I believe there is a new OPC in Cheshire Oaks which is een nearer to our house so may try them.

Ask your OPC who they use as most of them contract the services out to a "man in a van". OPC East Lon gave me the name of a chap who I contacted directly and I got him to do my last car just before I sold it. £100 I think for an interior and exterior valet including a polish, special alloy treatment and interior shampoo. He did this at my house and in my opinion, was well worth it.

You can get this from the Porsche web site. At 85k miles and 5 years old, you're probably better off at a good independent who'll charge you half the price.

The OPC at Cheshire Oaks is just a new location for the old Liverpool one.
You could try Wilmslow depending on where you are in the area.

If you plan to keep the car I'd change the oil every 12mths irrespective of mileage. As I understand it the degredation of the iol is not just mileage dependant but also depends on number of cold starts, amount of condensation in the engine etc. These extended oil cahnges have come about to reduce leasing costs for the corporate sector. The owner couldn't give a damn what happens to the engine after 3 or 4 years.
If I was looking for a second hand car I'd always look to check that there had been a yearly oil change
