Hi all,
As posted previously, I wanted to do a more detailed post to give my initial impressions of my first few weeks of 911 ownership, plus ask some questions and hopefully allay some concerns in the process. So here goes.....
Love the car, but every time I start it up, it scares me.....not sure if that makes sense, but having owned various pretty "boring" classic Mercedes over the last 15 years, this car feels different, which may sound obvious, but it feels tough (and basic) but yet quite delicate in other ways. I love the looks, power and being totally narcissistic, I love the reaction it gets, which is mainly very positive, although it seems to annoy van drivers, who always pull out on me....
I'm concerned that once it's warmed up, and at idle the oil pressure gauge occasionally drops to below 1 and the oil light (and central warning light comes on) put it back into the revs and all is ok. The temp needle sits t 10 o'clock , which I've ben told is high, plus I've also noticed that when I put it back in the garage, more often than not, there's a couple of drops of oil on the floor the next morning. Asking around, I've had all sorts of replies as to the potential issue, but its worrying me, so I'm going to get it over to 9E as and when I can ( and they can fit me in).
I'm a bit marmite over the ergonomics and layout of the interior, sometimes I find it charming and appreciate the design is from the early 60's, other times I just think "why did they do it like that?" and "how did they still sell these in the 1990's when faced with R129 SL's and E36 M3's?".
I'm surprised at many high end specialists there are covering Porsche, I live in the LB of Bromley and seem spoilt for choice, with garages in Kent, Surrey, Essex and inner London which is a marked difference when comparing to specialist Mercedes garages where all the good ones seem to be "oop North".....
Issues, well lots to do now that I've gone over it, I'll provide a non exhaustive list below, but first job is to replace the bonnet struts, which were cheap to source, but because I don't have arms like ET and can't see in the dark - it isn't going to be as easy as I thought it was going to be, so any advice greatly appreciated. I did replace the w/s washer bottle top and fuel cap seal, and was very pleased with myself, and I'm sure it'll run much better as a result...
Other jobs; find the alarm module (so I can order another fob), get another key cut, source an original drivers side overmat (mines missing) and sort this oil pressure light/ temp + tiny leak out.
Long term; the rear drop links look tired, the front bump stops need replacing (I assume although they're cheap to source, replacing them wont be?). The Michelin tyres are serviceable, but I'll probably replace next year , so any suggestions for a car that'll only do approx. 1k miles a year would be greatly received.
Cosmetically, its no trailer queen, its on 120k miles, so its what I call a "10 footer", as in, it looks great from 10 feet away, but gets worse as you get real close. Other cosmetic jobs are to either fix or replace the passenger door bin, which is detaching from the door, replace all engine stickers (£20.00 for the oil pressure one!!!!) and address a little surface corrosion here and there.
The early history is a little light, I've got the names of some previous owners, but am hesitant in case I breach any GDPR rules! I've never minded people contacting me about my previous cars, but thats just me.
Time to wrap it up, grateful for any thoughts, info and advice re the above, I do hope to make down to Porsche Tonbridge on the 16th Oct if ok.
All the best
