New brakes on 997 turbo

Wondered how true this might be

My car (997 turbo) has done 16k miles and had pretty gentle use in my opinion. The OPC dealer is advising new discs and brakes all round saying they have lasted very well so I have to do this really. Is this a normal type of maintenance item at that mileage? He looked at skimming them and said there wasnt enough metal to do that. The car is under 2 years old just so in warranty but of course I have to pay this.

Any feedback welcome as its not cheap for 4 new discs and pads, although got a parts discount by beeing a club member here. Any thoughts on reasonable costs for this as well from experience?
 
I would get a second opinion.

This is a standard revenue generator of the OPC's which the service team and mechanics all receive bonuses for.

You should get 40/50k out of a set of discs unless you are abusing your car and even then the fronts should wear out first.
 
This sounds excessive given the mileage and you say you are a lite user - ask to see pads and discs yourself or say you want a second opinion. Never pleasant all this - I can recommend OPC Cambridge if you are anywhere near there - they are a nice team and I have always found them helpful - they sometimes hint in advance about things needing doing in xx more miles etc. One thing - if the discs have pitted with rust from being parked up for long periods this can be a problem (regular use and the odd hard brake if you are not a trackie keeps them clean) - good luck.
 
I did see the pads and discs and they werent perfect for sure so went ahead, with a sensible discussion on labour rates and parts prices using GB club discount. Still first car I have owned that needing them changed so quickly, maybe I have just got used to actually being hard on the brakes when I think I am being gentle.
 
I am possibly hard on mine and they are at 25K with no needs for replacement at this time...
another 5k I reckon...

This is a rediculous amount of mileage to necessitate the replacement of discs all round even with reasonably hard use. Seems to me Porsche have adopted a cynical revenue generation scheme by making the discs out of a material that corrodes very redily. It seems to be a common theme across the models. If I were you i'd replace the disks with aftermarket disks.
 
If it had been due to rusting, surely the OPC would have said ?

How many pad exchanges have you had ?

Three sets to a set of discs ? Or would one expect more ?

 
OPC are no different to any main dealer - they advise on the current status and their opinion on whether they will provide service til the next service. With extended service intervals this means changing some items way before they may actually wear out, but as some owners don't loo at their cars between services or run them til the dashboard lights up the dealers still have a role to play.

In fairness to Fiat, they do advise their opinion on percentage wear, so at least you can judge whether to proceed at the time or wait a period of time.
 
I repeat my assertion that the Service guys and Mechanics receive bonuses based on any extra work(revenue) they can generate, this came directly from ex staff at Reading HQ.

Personally at 16k I would have gone after the discs as a warranty issue as not fit for purpose!!
