New Brakes Time

Ok so after reading a few posts I am looking at getting Sebro Discs and EBC Red Stuff Fast Road pads plus some Goodridge braided hoses for my 86 944 Turbo - then there will be no excuses for shoddy braking

1. How much difference will the cross-drilled make over solid? Anyone have any experience?
2. Are any of these parts available cheaper than Eurocarparts? (If not how do I go about getting a discount from Euro?)

I bought my sebro discs from eurocarparts, as they pretty much one of the cheapest.
If you do a search, there used to be one of the branches that gave a discount.

As far as crossdrilling, I was advised not to, as sometimes they show signs of cracking where they have been drilled, I cant remember the kind of use/or abuse needed for that to happen. So I just got the solid ones, which are even cheaper.
 
I bought cross-drilled Sebros as they perform just as well on the street, look better and were cheaper than solid ones.

Not too concerned about braking hard as braking is only for gays. [:D]
 
I use x-drilled Zimmermans and EBC red's with braided hose and Castrol SRF fluid on both '44s. Have found no problems so far. Recommended.
 
But then again the hearse has just warped its second set of Zimmermanns (solid, not drilled) after 3 weeks this time (4 now and they are getting much worse) and I know mik had the same issue on his S2, so while I know your set seem to be OK they are of patchy quality in my opinion. I would go with Sebro as they might even be OEM. The hearse will be getting Brembo next time round (OE on it I believe).
 
I got Zimmerman drilled discs on mine with EBC red stuff. I've suffered no disc warping problems but am a bit dissapointed with the feel of the set up. They seems to lack the initial bite of the previous OEM set up although I had no problems with brake fade or deteriorated performance on track - in fact they work fine on track due to the higher temps. I don't know if this lack of on road feel is attributable to the EBC pads, Zimmerman discs or the fact the discs are drilled. I've just bought a Big Black upgrade and decided to go with the std solid OEM discs rather than drilled again. With the big blacks I'm sure I wont be dissapointed with the perfomance.
 
It will still be down to the pads tp a large extent, Scott. I don't know if the EBC Reds are the problem in your existing setup or not as I have never used them, but I do know you can easily make or break brake feel with the pad choice.
 
Due to Fen and others recommendations I'm going from EBC Yellow f Green r to PFC pads. 01's on the front and 97's on the back. When I was buying them the guy asked what I had been using. When I replied EBC's he went silent and then muttered something to the effect "Shouldn't be allowed on the track". To be fair I found mine pretty good once I'd put in decent racing fluid, s/s braided lines, 968cs underbody air deflectors but the PFC's are meant to be the best from what I hear. I'll have these in next Sunday for a track day with all my new suspension goodies installed finally!!!!! Yay. This means custom KW 2 way race suspension, RacersEdge A-arms with monoballs front and rear, spherical drop links and solid rear sway bar brackets + Elephant Racing Polybronze bearings, Sorry for the list. Sometimes I just need to see it on paper to visualise where all the cash has gone!?!?
I'll report next Sunday night on the upgrades.

 
Sounds like an awesome setup to me, should give a very different feel on track. I had a few laps of Oulton Park as a passenger in Fen's car about a year ago & it felt well planted compared to the factory M030 I had on my Turbo.
 
I wasn't going to slate EBC's as I have no experience, but I was talking to a guy at the 'Ring who put in an 8:01 BTG in a basically standard, but stripped out E36 M3 (pre-Evo) on trackday tyres and coilovers. 8:01 with traffic is an awesome time for that car - it turns out he was a Jaguar test driver at the 'Ring as a day job.

Anyway he is the sort of person who I would respect the opinion of and he had EBCs on the back that had just worn out and he was very happy as he hates them. For reference he was going with Pagid endurance racing pads as a replacement.

I'm itching to see how your car is now, Patrick. Have you got any road miles on it yet and can give first impressions?
 
No not yet. It's not installed until next week. By next Sunday at the track, I meant a week away. It feels like ages since I first made the inquiries about suspension upgrades. Anyway I'm still a bit nervous as to how stiff the springrates are for it's streetlife. I hope at it's softest setting that it may be vaguely compliant. In two weeks time we are having an invitational against the BMW club and I am no. 2 picked for class 4 against some reasonably standard M3's so I hope to have a few miles on the car and some understanding of it's setup/tuning and do my bit for the team!
Jag test driver at the 'ring. Not a bad gig! By the way, how's Richard from 'Top Gear' doing? Hope he's ok.

I believe the Textar pads are the original pads Porsche fitted. I don't think they are upgrade pads so might not be a good choice if you do alot of track driving but will be perfectly fine on the road.

I've realised that the pads that came with my Big Black kit are the wrong ones - they are the pads for my original calipers i.e. early turbo/S2 pads front and rear therefore they are up for sale. They are Mintex pads and I will sell both pairs for the price of one pair - i.e. buy one get one free!! If anyone is interested give me a shout.
 
Sebros, Red Stuff and Goodridges ordered with sensors (£414, so a small saving through Lee at ECP)- but not sure I'm prepared to pay £60-70 for Castrol SRF! Ouch

is there a more economical option out there?
 
Also ATE Super Blue seems to have a good reputation. I've just been talked into a set of EBC Yellow R's for mine by K300 Performance. They are the pads he uses in his 968 with KW suspension and M030 calipers up-front and he reported that they have very good cold bite and good track performance so they sound like a good compromise for what I want. I think something like Fens pads would be a bit too track-focused for my car which spends most of it's time on the road so the temps never get that high and only see's the track maybe five times a year. I hope i'm not as dissapointed with them as the guy with the BMW. After my experiance with EBC Reds I'm coming to the conclusion that you are not going to find a perfect compromise pad that is good for both road and track, but apparently the Yellow R's have better cold 'bite' than the reds so i'll give them a whirl.
