Hi all, Newbie here!

Wonder if you can help?

I recently purchased a 944 S2, and their is significant juddering under braking, which I cant say I noticed when I bought the car, and it seems to have got worse.
So it looks like a new a set of discs, pads etc is on the cards.
My first question is there anything else that could be causing this problem other than warped discs as the discs and stuff look pretty new on the car?
Second has anyone had any experience of upgraded drilled discs?

My front zimmermann discs were slightly juddery when fitted, and got worse over time. Replaced under warranty after 8 months.

They weren't warped as such - the thickness wasn't consistant and when you braked lightly at low speed you could feel the braking force come and go as the wheel rotated - at higher speeds this manefested itself as a judder.

Are your Zimmermann discs, drilled ones?
I should have made myself clearer, standard ones fitted all round, but am interested in drilled, for performance and cosmetic enhancments.

You could try getting the discs skimmed if there is plenty of life left on them before replacing. I have recenly fitted drilled Zimmermans and i've not really noticed any difference in performance to the standard ones but i've not hammered them on a track so they've not been tested to any great extent. They do look the business and can be a bit noisy under certain conditions making a graunching noise under braking but I quite like it. My advice would be to get them if you like the looks of them (they are slightly cheaper than standard disks as well) but don't expect a huge noticable performance increase. Zimmermans do seem to have a bit of a bad reputation but i've had no problems with them yet and there are plenty of people on this forum who run them with no problems at all - but on the flip side there are a couple who have reported problems.

Yes, mines the same - the judder is much better than it was but it took a bit of getting used to (only seems to do it if a brake at speed) along with the noise as sawood12 has stated.
I'm using std zimmermans but i don't thing i'de use them again (would try the drilled though possibly )as i'm sure mine warp slightly when hot as i have an intermittent squeak on the front drivers side every now and then.
 
Funny that, the only threads i've read from people that have reported warping and juddering issues with Zimmermans have all had the non-drilled disks. Mine are showing no signs of juddering at all....yet.
 
Are there any other makes of drilled discs out there?

Just had a look through invoices, and I'm wondering whether the discs have been skimmed or the car just hasnt racked up a lot of miles as the fronts were changed in 2000 and the rears 2001, to OE spec, as they physically look quite new and have no ridges at the edge.

But if I'm going to change them I want to replace them with something better if possible.
 
I don't think Zimmermans are better than OE for a second. I only got them because I preferred the look of the drilled disk and you can't get drilled OE disks.
 
Could someone also explain the diiference in specs, as there seem to be ones that say "except sport suspension", then you get ones that are specific front left/ front right....
My car has been lowered 30mm and has 17" wheels for background.
As you can tell I'm not exactly clued up with all this. lol
 
The optional M030 sports suspension was available on early 944 turbo's and became standard on later 944 turbo's and included larger dia front disks and larger calipers carried over from the 928S4. With your's being the S2 it will have the same brakes as the non-M030 specc'd turbo's. I'm not even sure M030 was an option on the S2???
 
I think it probably was an option, but hardly ever specified.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]Drilled disks are handed because the holes are in angled lines that should radiate from the centre to the edge such that they slope "backward" if you follow, so because the wheels rotate different ways so the rows of holes have to be opposite each other.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
 
I've had about 3 sets of drilled Zimmermans now without any problems whatsoever.

As Fen says, the sport discs are for the Turbo 250 (or M030 option) that has 928S4 calipers. The discs are thicker. It's very unlikely that your S2 has these.
