New C2S PDK (updated with initial thoughts)

Well having popped in yesterday to see what the cost of change to a Gen2 was compared to applying X51 to my 23mth old C2S it turned out I was pleasantly surprised and I ended up placing a deposit on a brand new C2S PDK they already had in stock. The car was rather spookily almost identical to my ideal spec (and current car!), as if it was just fated to be there waiting for me to wander in! I negotiated a PSE fitted in the deal (eta April/May) and a promise that I can get an aerokit fitted at cost price too (and capped at factory cost) whenever its out.

Clearly the fact it was a stock car helped them move on my trade in and it seems Porsche GB are still helping out on loyalty bonuses on 911. Also the dealership had quarter end targets to make for the end of this month so all those together meant that for once the cost of change wasn't as bad as I had expected it might have been. PDK , those 30 extra horses and all the latest upgrades and the ideal spec persuaded me to jump in.

So sadly I will not now be experiencing X51 or the decals (thanks for all the help and advice here though) however I will be experiencing Gen2 and PDK very soon!

So here is the spec of my new baby - I pick her up on Tuesday!

Carrera 2S
Bassalt Black / Black
PDK
Sport Chrono Plus
PSE (on order to be fitted ASAP)

Adam Congrats. You'll just love it. I am interested myself in the PSE when its available but would like to hear it first. My gen1 C2 had PSE which was great and enhanced the looks from single to double pipes.

Sounds like you have the same low level of self-restraint that I have! Well done, nice spec. I'm also looking forward to hearing the PSE! Enjoy![:D] Alan

Thanks guys - 24hrs on and Im still happy with my perhaps somewhat impulsive decision. Ive had to put a bit of blind faith in porsche re the Gen2 PSE but I have PSE on my current C2S and it instantly became one of the essential must haves for any future p-car of mine. Gen2 PSE tips ceratinly a little odd and perhaps not as nice as they did before but as long as it sounds like the current one unplugged I will be a happy man. I cant see them making a backwards step and making it quieter but time will tell. Dealer said he expects T-equipment parts to arrive before any factory fit PSE cars do so I will have the first PSE they have supplied! Just hoping it can be unplugged again - I think I've read a rumour somewhere that it cant be done on the new one?? I hope this isnt the case otherwise I shall be dissapointed as unplugging your PSE is almost as essential as the PSE itself to me. There is clearly a switch on the dash for Gen2 PSE to turn it on/off so that indicates to me that means once again it will have variable baffles so Id be very surprised if the brown plug isnt just loitering there again asking to be disconnected! I shall certainly post my thoughts on how it compares to Gen1 PSE as soon as I have it.

Things have moved on at a pace and there is now a good chance I will pick it up this afternoon instead of tomorrow. Woke up this morning with a mini wobble over loosing PSE for a month and more significantly Aero for perhaps 6mths! They feel like the heart and sole of my car and Im giving them up! Feel like Im trading a Spitfire for a Stealth Fighter. Im sure it will be better in so many ways but Im a tad worried now that it will loose the very essence of what I love about the current car.

Don't worry, be happy! I made exactly the same move and I'm still very pleased I did. More like changing from a Merlin Spit to a Griffon! [;)] Will be happier still if the PSE comes up to scratch. It's almost worth it just to show your mates the party piece![:D] Hope you can pick it up today, should be dry all day! This sounds better than the standard exhaust: [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4q3KNwhj5Y]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4q3KNwhj5Y[/link] [:D][:D]

Adam Think of it as getting 3 new beasts - 1 stealthy, then one loud and stealthy and then the full monty with wings, each change it'll feel like you bought another new car. 3 times the fun[:D]

Very nice indeed - I shall be very happy if PSE sounds as good as that!!! Well it seems the car is ready at 2:30pm now so I'll be off soon to go pick it up. My worries earlier have subsided somewhat now and I am all excited again. Hmmm, how many miles are you supposed to do before using launch control for the first time! Cant wait.... [:D][:D][:D]

Got the link from here [link=http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/997-vendor-classifieds/162986-fvd-brombacher-997-2-development-results.html]http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/997-vendor-classifieds/162986-fvd-brombacher-997-2-development-results.html[/link] Looks like we could up the Gen 2S to 423BHP - at a price - around 6800 euros from their website! We could keep up with Tom then![;)] [link=http://shop.fvd.de/de/en/?Forwarding=no]http://shop.fvd.de/de/en/?Forwarding=no[/link] Depends who you talk to about the Launch. I was very patient and waited for the owners manual 1800 miles before I gave it the full treatment - nearly[;)]

ok time for a few very first impressions (Ive only had the car for 6 hours and driven only 50miles and fiddled with PCM for a couple of hours to get to know it), but here goes... Overall the car already feels very different indeed to the Gen1 car - far more so than I expected and and in many unexpected ways to those that my test drive had revealed. Ride Its much more comfortable and compliant over uneven surfaces. The car feels much more like a GT cruiser than the bumpy but nimble Gen1, it almost feels like a much bigger heavier car. Im sure it will be an easier car to live inside but the drive does feel a little sanitised and some of that "fun at 50mph" factor seems to have gone and you seem to have to drive it faster to get the same thrill. On a long drive or on a bumpy road the Gen2 will excel of that I have no doubt as the Gen1 ride felt almost bone shakingly hard and old fashioned when compared to Gen2. I feel however that it has lost some of the great feedback I got from the old car. For some reason I didnt really notice the ride difference at all on the test drive perhaps because I was too focused on PDK, but now the two cars feel like chalk and cheese. Performance / PDK First let me say that PDK is great - I love it. Ive grouped performance and PDK together here because I do feel they are significantly linked. The car (even trying to hold it under 5k rpm) feels significantly faster than the old one, I mean a lot faster indeed almost warp speed! I shudder to think how fast it will feel once its run in. Much of the difference is down to PDK of that I am sure as it just rockets through the gears so smoothly you just seem to 'woosh' everywhere. Not sure why but I am definately driving it much faster than the I drove the old one. My initial thoughts are that my heavy right foot is down to either a) first day and Im pushing it more to see what it can do b) because the PDK encourages you to blast along as it is so much fun c) because putting Sport Mode on unfortunatly seems essential to get a punchy rapid change out of the PDK and thus the throttle response is also remapped d) the lack of PSE means Im going faster to try to get some audio feedback out of the engine or e) a combination of all of the above?? Either way this car feels like a rocketship compared to my old C2S, so much so that right now Im worried Im going to loose my license. I never felt the old car was slow but the difference is quite dramatic. Irrespective of speed I am missing PSE big time, the new car sounds like a muted hairdryer compared to the sheer loudness and the delicious pops and burbles of my unplugged PSE Gen1 car. The good news here is that my PSE is on order and should be fitted in around a month - I just pray it restores the soundtrack of Gen1 and that it can be unplugged. PCM / USB / BOSE / Bluetooth etc... There is a significant improvement in the Nav functionality and the touchscreen interface is just fantastic compared to the old twisty dial only interface. The only gripe I have so far is that the lady's voice is a little robotic compared to the old voice - she sounds a little like a female Dr Steven Hawkins! and far less pleasing to the ear. Sound quality from the new BOSE is also improved over the old BOSE too and the Ipod interface is also delightfully simple to use. Bluetooth seems to work just fine (although the dealer had to change the mode before my phone would pair as it is a HTC smartphone) - after the initial mode change problems all seems fine and the phonebook synced just fine. Other bits Love the LED daylights and the car looks more modern and slick externally. Adaptive sports seats are also much more comfortable than sports seats (I really didnt expect this to at all) and the side cushions seem far less prone to squashing as you get in and out. That said I am not sure they are worth £1350 more than sports seats however - Hmm as I type this I am wondering if the adaptive seats are partially responsible for softer more comfortable ride?? Even without an Aerokit Ive found myself really liking the 'stealth' looks of the new car already it is a more beautiful car to look at if a little less eyecatching without Aero. Overall its hard to say how I feel at the moment - there is a lot to be very positive about but its not as clear cut as I had hoped. Dont get me wrong I wasnt going to keep the old car forever so at some point it had to go and 2 years old has always been my trigger point previously. I did of course debate keeping it longer and adding X51, something that is now ringing in the back of my mind as something I should have not given up on as right now I'm not sure the new car is an improvement in all areas. I realise however it is very early days to make such conclusions and hopefully a few days into ownership my thoughts will change as I settle into the differences. In summary the new car is so much smoother, faster, slicker and more modern than the old car but some of the soul and character seems to have gone too. Quite a few unexpected feelings on the first day. On the negative side I am a little worried about the sheer speed of it (haha!), the ride whilst more comfortable has lost some feedback and feel and I am missing PSE perhaps most of all. On the positive side PCM3 is a huge improvement, I am already loving the looks and not missing Aero half as much as I thought I would and oh boy is it fast - The performance that Gen2 with PDK is capable of is very addictive indeed!

Ok tried Sport PASM this morning on the way to work and I prefer it - the ride seems much more like the old car on normal PASM. Sport PASM on Gen1 was so boneshakingly hard that I never used it and I had assumed the same of Gen2 without trying it yesterday. On Gen2 Sport PASM seems just about right (so far) although for motorway driving Im sure Normal will be better.

Hi Adam, Give it 3 months and you will even more impressed! I like the ride much more than the Gen 1, less bobbing, and just select Sport or Sport+ if I want to feel the bumps more! Agree about the PDK - I spend a lot of the time in "manual" so that I choose the gear not the car. As I've said before I'm waiting on PSE too! Lots of gripes about the Sat Nav not having full postcode but that aside the PCM as a package is much, much better. I had all sorts of problems with the phone initially but changed to a Nokia (contract was up anyway) and that works brilliantly. I don't like the fairy lights and have selected them "off" !! Have you tried Launch on a demonstrator? If not you have a treat in store! Enjoy![:D] Alan

Adam, a great post [:)] Thank you for taking the time to write and post it.. Its great to hear a balanced and positive post.... even I'm thinking PDK...[8D] garyw

I was more than mildly irritated, Rob!! I went along to test drive the PDK demonstrator just to "get it out of my system" and satisfy myself that I was more than happy with my manual Gen 1. Not only did I find the performance of the PDK stunning but many other parts of the car were a step up from before. So instead of hating it I thought it was terrific and the rest is a hole in the bank balance! Now with 3.5k on the clock it feels very natural to drive with the buttons and on the track with Sport + is quick enough for me! They look very nice in red too..............[;)]

Adam Great post - I am sure given a little while to get used to the changes you'll end up loving the car. When i drove the PDK Gen 2 at Silverstone last year my initial impressions were near identical to yours - very fast changes will make the car very quick when run in but some of the initial grin factor at low speeds seems to have gone, so has a fair bit of feedback. This could just be because the car is tight and new - you could give us a running in update in a few thousand miles to see what has changed.

Speaking of grin factor have you seen this? [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_HRRtXcDdg]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_HRRtXcDdg[/link] [:)][:)][:)]

Nice Video The guy with the camera seems to keep hitting his head on the door window or his face on the video cam[:D] Same interior colour as mine
