NEW CAR - 987 Cooling Fan - enquiry

Evening guys (and ladies of course)

Well I purchased the car (see earlier post) and it drives fantastic, not a squeak, no smoke, no rattles and the temperature is welded 1mm past the 80 mark just like my previous 986's and 996. Its great to be back, I cant believe I survived driving any other mark for 2 years.

Just one thing i've noticed, once I arrived home the car was turned off, and then fired back up within a minute and met with the cooling fan (drivers side and blowing quite cold air), which then continued to run in excess of 5 mins despite the temperature being perfectly situated. I then drove the vehicle for approximately a mile and the fan switched off. The journey continued for approx a further 7 miles, silence. Within a minute of pulling up, the fan sounds... switched off for a further 5 mins and then turned back on, fan sounds again, placed the car on drive and let it run again only to be met with this fan running blowing quite cold air (I become a little concerned and switched it off)...

...Is there any explanation for this or is this normal on the 987 2.7 2005? Note, I did do a little web search for this symptom and found a very popular car related forum with 987 owners all claiming its quite normal having an extended fan running period.

Any advice and responses would be gratefully received,

Thanks

Chris
ps. Did I mention its great to be back!?

Welcome back ... I assume the fan you are referring to is the one behind your right ear?

If so it is the engine bay cooling fan and its operation (post running the car) can give rise to concern, although it is, in most cases quite normal.

I have known for the engine bay temp sensor fail and for the fan to run continuously and for some 'tuning' programs to reverse the logic ie it runs when cold and stops when hot.

In your case it sounds like it's OK, it will usually runs for 1-5 minutes when then engine bay is hot then switch off.

The good news is it can easily be replaced and in Porsche parts terms is quite cheap (997 606 213 00) for around 15 pounds.

It sits here (right hand side):

Thanks for the reply and the welcome back Nick, i'll keep you posted...

I did drive it this morning for approx 7 miles, no fan from start to finish (even when I let the car sit for 5 mins idling at the end) - this time I drove on ECO (no a/c) - maybe its related?

Many thanks

Chris

Just like to mention, post drive - yesterday (when the engine is switched off the fan shuts down) - so it didn't continue to run afterwards.

Just an update, drove the car earlier cold start, no fan. Arrived at destination, no fan. Left for 20 mins, then restarted met with fan... Drove for about a mile, fan switchettd off. Remember the temp is 80 on the mark or below when restarted after a period. The car was sat for an 1 and 1/2 hrs restarted met with fan... drove about 5 miles in which the fan quickly switched off and remained off.
When I restarted the car to move it onto the drive (5mins after arriving i was met with the fan again... i left it idle for in excess of 7 mins but the fan continued and the A/C was off?
Like I said before, theres no smoke, rattles, oil use, perfect temp etc.

Hmmmm strange.

Mine does it too btw. It seems more common in the 987 than the 986.

At least my car has an excuse being the 987 'Halloween Edition' [:D]
