New car deposit

Is it usual to have to give an OPC £4000 as a deposit for a new car even though the OPC is unable to give a delivery date?

The "holding deposit" varies from dealer to dealer. When I ordered my first Boxster it was £1000, and now I am being asked for £2000. This only gets you a place in the queue and is fully refundable.

At the time you spec the car you normally make this up to 10% of the final price.

Delivery dates are only estimates, and then only after you have specced the car.

Which part of the process are you in?

Paid the £2k and have done the spec but no delivery date, just around March!!

If this is the norm with no return of deposit, I will pay it. As you will see, I have NEVER HAD A NEW CAR before!!

I tried e-mailing the PCGB but they never replied so I gave up, so at a loss to know what to do next

Normal procedure now is £2000 deposit to secure an allocated slot. This is refundable.

Then, when the car is spec'd ready for build (normally four months before estimated delivery date), there is a further deposit of, I believe, £3,000. Officially the deposit then becomes non-refundable. In practice.......it depends!
 
I paid £2K and I am not parting with more until my car arrives...my dealer hasn't said anything to the contrary.
 
Just had a letter inviting me to part with £2000 for a place on the waiting list. The last time it was only £1000 with a full 10% of the cars value paid when the build date is confirmed. This is then non refundable as the car is being built for you. Although you would normally get this back when the car is sold to someone else.
 
I've recently been through this as well while discussing the new Boxster with my local OPC. Not Chiswick.

Their position was: they wanted £3000, non refundable deposit.

Well i'm not happy to part with that sort of money before a car has even been released. So after discussions, I went to another OPC (shame - not!) who I have given £2000 deposit, which IS fully refundable untill the point when I spec the car. At that point I hand over the difference to make the 10%. Of course the £2000 is double the amount I paid just over 2 years ago, but then again times do change.

I'm currently talking to Reading, which if I remember correctly, like Chiswick is the old AFN isn't it?
 
So you might expect them to have a consistent policy, as opposed to comparing the AFN bunch to the Sytner lot.
 
I received a letter fro Reading at the weekend stating a £2000 deposit. As they are the "official" Porsche dealer I would expect that this is now the norm. As mentioned previously two years ago the deposit was £1k but I suspect that they are taking advantage of the new model to improve their cashflow by having a few hunderd additional £k in their deposit account for a few months - nice work if you can get it.....

As most cars are built to order, and most specifications are personal, both the dealer and manufacturer want to be reassured that the buyer will complete on delivery.

Geoff Turral showed me around the delivery compound at Reading, and some people do specify some pretty unusual colour/spec combinations that would not easily re-sell at list.

Disagree - all my spare cash was tied up in the existing Porsche. My plan was to order a new one, trade in old one and finance the difference. I simply don't have 2-4K spare for the OPC to hold on to. They lost me as a customer for this reason alone.
 
The deposits required to secure a build slot were increased about 9-12 months ago, i.e. before the 997 and 987 were announced and before they started even taking orders for them.

The amount went to 2K for a Boxster to 3K for a Cayenne and I think 3K for a 911, and 5K for a turbo 911.

For Guildford at least, the 2K is refundable, since they can pass the build slot on to someone else easily since there is no shortage of customers (which is usually the case unless you ordered the last 996 C2). It secures a place against their build allocation.
The 10% deposit is required when you spec the car. This is not officially refundable, but as long as they can find another taker for your car (bearing in mind the new punter will not get to spec it), then you get it back. This happens from time to time, e.g. when I bought mine they had had another 996 TT buyer who had waited a year for the car, then was posted overseas and could not take the car with him. Fortunately, the spec was very safe and the car could be sold.
If they had to sell it below list, then I guess they take the difference from your deposit.
