New cayman paint protection

I bought a Cayman 987 new in 2007 and sold it 8/9 years later. It was regularly washed and waxed but didn't have any plastic or ceramic coating. The paint was good after that time with only minor stone chips on the bonnet and front bumper (never repainted). Like you I am open to new ways of preserving paintwork but, in the meantime, regular washing and waxing seams okay.

 
+1 on that Jase. After 12-years on my 987.2 CS the paint’s still looking good with occasional hand-washing and a yearly polish and wax (and half-yearly wax if I remember it [;)]). Having said that it’s low mileage fun/weekend car and not a daily drive, so you’d need to factor that into the equation.

Since you enjoy keeping the paintwork looking good I’m sure you’ll be OK without PPF or ceramic coating.

Now I like washing and polishing my cars, keeps me 'fitish' and I find it relaxing. I'm thinking about PPE but not overly keen on a plastic film on the car and ceramic coatings just don't do it for me. I appreciate the way they maintain a shine and repel the water. So I guess the question is has anyone bought a new Porsche and just washed and polished their car as and when in the 21st century :) ? I'm happy to have the bumper and bonnet repainted if and when it needs it but to be honest I'll probably just been changing the car for a new one at that point.
 
I never had any treatments applied to my 981 Cayman when I bought it nearly 6 years ago, it has since done 51k miles.

I always wash it myself and apply Swisswax products regularly, the paintwork looks good and remains free of swirls.

Unfortunately I was caught following a gritting lorry on the motorway a few years ago and the front bumper section is peppered with small chips. I've not bothered to get painted as it's only really obvious if you view from ground level.

I'll get the nose section painted when I eventually sell the car.

Same here - no car condom or magic coatings on my 981 GTS or current 718 GT4.

I did 14k miles in the GTS over 4 years and only had one or two small stone chips on the front bumper otherwise the car was immaculate. The GT4 has picked up 2 or 3 in the 18 months I've had it, again on the front bumper - I think more than the GTS due to it being so low. It lives outside and I wash it when it needs it but not obessively and it gets a full detail/valet from our local mobile guys twice a year.

 
Just throw a spanner in the works and offer a different view, I went for Front and sills protection on my new GTS order, I will probably go for the whole car (still mulling it over). The way these films look now and how they wear is very much different from say 5-10 years ago. Since ticking the option I've watched quite a few You Tube videos on the subject as well as doing a bit of other research and for me it makes sense to pay the extra for this, I've seen the evidence of large rocks hitting car bonnets hard enough to dent it but still leave all the paint intact without a chip, that's pretty impressive.

come sale time in 5 years the paint work will still look 'as new' which will certainly go someway to recouping some of the initial layout.

 
85% cars are not owned and on PCP hand backs and people protect them, I find it strange.

 
I reckon one area on the 981/718 which will benefit from PPE is the sill and air intake area. Unlike the 987, which has mastic applied to the lower sill area, there’s no such protection on the later-series cars.

I thought that figure was high so googled it and it appears 80-85% of all new cars are on PCP which surprises me, isn't this an expensive way to fund a new car, dealer borrowing rates arent usually competitive

People don't buy things any more - they essentially rent them. I suspect that very few people taking out PCP will ultimately own that car.

Which isn't a bad thing if that's what you want to do, it's just different but yes it's expensive.

 
I have a complete front clip and rocker panels PPF’d along with a ceramic coating and yes, mines on a PCP as I didn’t have c.£60k to spend on a car in one hit (2 teenage kids and the bank of mum and dad come in to play here). My intention through is to buy it outright in the next year or trade it in for a GTS And, to be fair, VWFS interest rates weren’t that bad.

I am extremely fastidious when it comes to my car (I even polished the silencers) and I didn’t want the pain of paying for a respray if it were needed. For me the cost of PPF and ceramic is worth it.
