New Cayman - Rohrl Recommends 19" Wheels

19" also have the advantage of being cheaper! Just a shame all the nice designs are 20" - I guess Porsche do that deliberately! The 991 S Boxster I borrowed had 20" wheels and PASM and I must say the ride was fabulous.

Yet another favourable Cayman review:

Interesting to note that Rohrl comments that 20" wheels have no added benefit on public roads, apart from their looks, and that he would go with the 19" wheels as the best all-round option for daily use.

He also says that the Pirelli PZero works best of all the tyres on the 20" wheels, but that Michelin and Bridgestone are closing the gap fast. On the 19" wheels, the Bridgestone is head of the pack.

All the cars I've seen with 20" wheels had PZero tyres fitted. Are Michelins and Bridgestones available yet?

Jeff

I've driven a new Cayman and an S both using 20" P Zeros. Fantastic grip and rode well I've been using Bridgestones 19" for a couple of years on my Gen1 and Michelin Alpins 18" through the last winter, all very impressive.[;)]

There's certainly more choice of tyres for the 19" wheels Kevan, with the added bonuses of lower wheel and tyres costs and reduced unsprung masses too. Plus, I rather like the standard 981 Cayman wheels. Jeff

It's the same every time wheel sizes are increased and not so long ago 17"was an upgrade, expensive too. Makes me wonder how large will they go?[8|] I liked the look of the 20" wheels but such low profiles do tend to allow more wheel/tyre damage due to pot holes etc.

Yes Kevan, the 20" wheels do look good and fill the wheel arches nicely too (no doubt a Porsche marketing ploy to get the purchaser to upgrade!). With the emphasis being on tread grip and steering feel, the latest tyres are beginning to look like rubber bands attached to the wheels. We appear to have gone full circle from solid rubber cart wheel tyres, through Dunlop pneumatic tyres and back to something resembling cart tyres again. Who knows where it will end? Perhaps there'll be a re-emphasis on comfort and a move towards higher and more flexible sidewalls. Jeff
