New Cayman S

Hi Guys,

I am looking at getting a new Cayman S.

Extras I have marked are:

LSD
Rear Wiper
Park Assist

Any other extras actually worth the money?

Is the PCM/Sat Nav worth the money? Can you load POIs (speed cameras) onto it?

Thanks for any help

Andy

Personally I wouldn't bother with the rear wiper as it spoils the look and the only time you'll really need it is if its been damp overnight and the car isn't garaged. Xenon's are worth the money. PCM and Sat Nav? Although I have these I'm not sure they are worth the expenditure in all honesty. SatNav doesn't do full postcode and no, as far as I'm aware, you can't load camera data on to it. Alot of the time if I end up using my TomTom instead.

Hi Andy, Hard to say what's really worth it and what's not. Opinions will vary. eg for me, I really wanted the integrated sat nav because I think it's a neater solution than using my TomTom (with the windscreen sucker and 12v power supply). Perhaps the TomTom is actually better, but as long as the PCM 3.0 sat nav actually works, then I'm happy. Plus I wanted ipod connectivity and phone module. For the cosmetic stuff, it might be worth a visit to your nearest OPC. My one had a variety of options on a variety of cars so I was able to see for myself what I liked and what I could live without. eg - I've ordered black wheels. My OPC had two cars dressed accordingly. One had straight black, the other had them in Basalt black metallic. I chose the latter having had the benefit of seeing them side by side... I don't know if you can load POIs into PCM 3.0 though - sorry.

Hi Guys, Thanks very much for the info. I must admit ipod and phone would be very useful, the only way to get this is with the full PCM with Nav then? POI is pretty important for me as it has saved me quite a few times with mobile camera sites. I was thinking of the xenons, so looks like they are on the list. Is the PASM worth it, I seem to be reading mixed opinions? Thanks Andy

Is the PASM worth it, I seem to be reading mixed opinions? Bob, As you are ordering a new Gen II Cayman then I would say NO you don't need PASM unless you are going to track it every weekend similarly the LSD! I think 19ins wheels are a must with the Cayman as they look so much better than the 18ins and the ride is firm, but fine - see my recent post on this topic to the other newbie's question. I think PCM 3.0 is "nice to have" for the touch screen feature alone: radio, phone and Sat/ Nav use but I wouldn't pay 2k for it. Also make sure you spec climate and rear parking sensors, a must. Chris

"I was thinking of the xenons, so looks like they are on the list" if you are going to do any reasonable amount of night driving they are a MUST(imo)vast difference over standard lights

I have just ordered a Cayman 2.9 and for me climate control, parkassist, sound package and phono socket were all essentials. I also went for 18" alloys with wheel centre kit and leather seats, but you get those 'for free' on an S. I agree with Chris S that the 19" wheels look better (I especially like the Carrera Sport and Carrera Classics) but my budget was groaning and I think the Cayman S alloys look nearly as good. The car I had for a 24h test drive had 19" alloys and PASM, and in Normal mode the ride was really impressive. Didn't like Sport mode at all, but I think that really is for track use only. In summary I would have liked 19" alloys and PASM, but that would have been an extra 4 grand! I also flirted with heated seats as they seem very effective, but I left them out in the end.

YES, this option is a must as having had the non-climate panel, it is very basic (no digital display - just a bar) and is not worthy of Porsche, IMO.

It is daunting when you get on that configurator and start putting a new porsche together - it took a long time before I finalised my order which is now in and due for an April build. I spoke to a number of people both owners and Porsche centres and after taking a Cayman S out for a 24 hr drive in all weather conditions and with so much kit on it, it answered a lot of initial queries - but end of day everything is personal. I would concur with the reply re wiper, which was on my original spec, but after my test drive, I found it unnecesary with the slant of the glass clearing the rain rapidly and most of all I think it spoils the rear lines. I was not going for the Sat Nav, but found it a better piece of kit than prior models and with its ipod connectivity etc etc - I was sold !, also with the climate control. There are many arguments for an against 18" or 19" wheels with or without PASM, which I would not have without Sport Chrono - so I splashed out and went for the lot with a whhel upgrade, but not the LSD, as although I will track the car, only occasionally. Where I think Porsche are taking the pi** is I note now and do not know yet whether I will be affected having negociated an extra year's warranty free of charge, is that all new builds come with 3 years warranty, but i understand you are forced to purchase it with recovery - who needs that when all it is is normal RAC AA, all of which is presumably in your own insurance. What security VTS system will you be opting for ? Good luck and enjoy !!!

Not in my insurance. I have never had to use Porsche, yet, but VW (they use specially trained RAC as well) always gave me a decent service (apart from the last time), i.e. they knew what was wrong straight away and fixed it. I am not sure I would want an untrained person poking about in my car. That is my job [:D]

My experience of Porsche assistance was that there was anything but a Porsche expert - they organised a recovery with the wrong vehicle to load my car from miles away, on second attempt some 2 hrs later, damaged the paintwork and who had no idea about Porsche and basically advised me that all they do is the same as RAC AA. I have Norwich Union Gold Club insurance, organised by Heritage via tha club with a full inclusive insurance on my current Boxster S at £500. I am advised the new Cayman S won't cost much more !!

Hi Guys, I went for a second hand Cayman S Design edition in the end, picking it up saturday. Thanks for all the advise, this way I had to make no decisions :) All the best Andy

Best wishes and enjoy it from here too Andy. As already stated, please post a pic up when you can ?? Chris

Hi Guys, Got The Car today, very nice it is as well. When I get some photos done (please stop raining) I will post them here. The only issue I have is difficulty getting it into reverse, is there some kind of special knack required? Cheers Andy

You should hit the lever to the left and then forward to get through the reverse baulk. Does it have short shift, if so first will also be stiff to engage when cold?

Andy, I hope you got a year's tax included as assuming 2008 Gen I it will cost you £455 or thereabouts for 12 months tax.

Hi Guys, Yep it is short shift, I have the knack off it now it just needs rather more force than I am used to. It is 2008 Gen, tax runs out end of April :( Now all I am trying to sort out is a rattle from the rear when the hard suspension is turned on, I have rotated the rubber spacer things at the rear of the hatch, hopefully that will sort it otherwise its back to the dealers. It's a great little car though :) Cheers Andy

That will be the short shift requiring more leverage in both the low gears. What's the spec? Am I right about the 12 months tax? Cayman S is such a great car, enjoy!
