New Clutch

The link doesn't work but yes...this is too good to be true...IMHO avoid such companies at all cost.

Pete

Following Tom's Silverstone experience we need a new clutch.

The official channels suggest around £500, however

www.onineautomotive.co.uk offer one at £75 inclusive.

Is this too go to be true? Should I consider an upgrade to a competition clutch (and go for equity release to pay for it)?

Cheers Gerry

Agree with PSH - way too cheap for a quality product unless you can verify it is old stock SACHS (or comparable) on clear out pricing. Even then it seems to good to be true. The current SACHS catalogue only offers a kit for Turbo or Normally Aspirated 944s - no distinction between base, S or S2 - lets hope this means they standardized the NA clutch on the strongest one. Cheapest I found a couple of years ago was around US$500 so finding one at an 80% discount is kind of amazing unless it is old stock clearance.

Gerry,

I was wondering how you were getting on with this. What had happened - the centre snapped out of the old clutch? It's good that it's a clear diagnosis.

That website (I presume you meant www.onlineautomotive.co.uk ) is showing Rymec clutches for that price, and a selection of others at POA prices. It's too cheap to be true, although I'd be curious to know what you would get if you ordered one. I suspect a load of hassle and an eventual refund. However the clutch job on a 944 is a big job and it would be a proper nuisance to have to take everything apart a second time if a cheap part failed prematurely. However I may almost be tempted to call them up and have a chat about the options, with the approach that it will cost you 5 minutes and you are 95% likely to get nowhere.

Bruce's comment about it possibly being an Old Stock item ties in well with this thread here:

Tom, if you want a hand fitting the thing then I'd be quite happy to come and wield a spanner for a day or two.

Oli.

Thanks Pete/Bruce/oli,

Tom's homeless ATM sold his old house last month, new one not finished yet. So he's got his red 944 in his brother-in-laws garage and no space for the black one.

I'm in France back in three weeks, so hopefully he'll be in his new house then, if so I'll trailer the car down first/second week of September.

What I'm thinking is we need to identify a clutch supplier, I get everyone's point regarding the Online people too big a risk, but tempting.

I just wonder if there's a recommended comp clutch or realistically priced supplier out there.

Oli, I'm sure Tom would appreciate your help, he'll give you call when he's in possession, so to speak.

Cheers

Gerry

Gerry,

Those online people are very cheap. And I'd share your temptation to call them and have a chat. You have the luxury of time (it's not for your only car, lying broken by the roadside) so you could do worse than order one and see what you get. If it's good then you have your answer (and a chunky saving). If it's rubbish then you just need to pay the return postage.

If it is indeed rubbish then try Max Schenker of Frazerpart. He sold me my new clutch about 6 years ago and was the cheapest at the time. And his customer service is always excellent.

Can't help with a competition clutch but have you thought about a lightened flywheel while you are in there? I saw some for an S2 at the London Classic Car Show for around £200 each. Can't remember the supplier but they were readily available.

Oli.

Yeah I'm technically homeless but good news is my new home demo is arranged for next week and apparently should have keys the following week (31st).

Cheapest kit I've found was on Design911.co.uk - they have a standard kit, 2 year warranty - with a free small (think 5%) discount code currently on offer (til 20th) - £462.84.

I did notice you can purchase the Clutch Centre Friction Plate independently for £353.34 (same as above), they also have a release bearing for around £150 but didn't suggest it was for S2. Problem with that is I'm assessing parts it's general appearance - and as mentioned before, if any fail - you don't really want to go in there twice!

Given the larger £££ associated with the potential failure - think the first stage is to get in there and start assessing the problem in a methodical approach - discovering the failure, having a quiet cry in the shower... then looking at some parts online ;)

Tom

My guess would be that theyre re-manufactured. Sprung plates are up to it, but whether its a good idea depends on quality of workmanship and lining material...

Ive been checking prices on clutches also due to the recent demise of my rubber donut.

Both Design 911 and Frazerpart do the Sachs kit for around £500 for an S2. As Tom says D911 are a little cheaper just now especially if you add the promo which is 4-8% off depending on the total amount you are spending.

Remember that D911 prices don't include the VAT unless you tick the little box in the top right corner.

Make sure you're comparing like for like.

Yes, they are indeed like for like. Both offer them at a little over £400 plus the dreaded VAT.

I ordered mine yesterday along with new crank ref sensors whilst we are at it and made best use of the 6% extra discount.

All the other bits such as clutch fork shaft and bearings, pinch bolts, guide tube etc were cheapest at OPC by the way.

Ian

I'd order new needle bearings as well, mine were rather seized and pressing into the fork shaft leaving deep impressions on it.

Yes - got them on order also.

Not much change out of £1k for all the parts when I add up my D911 & OPC spend [:(] - didn't realise there are 2 Crank sensors on the S2 an they were £120 each!

I did get a new 02 sensor whist I was at it so that bumped up the cost a bit.

Just the labour now!
