New discs - a question.

I have just replaced all four discs on my car, but am now worried by a remark in Adrian Streather's excellent book - 996 the essential companion - which indicates that these are handed, with right and left discs being marked as such. I am quite sure that mine were not marked. There is no indication in Rodney's link (technical forum) that handing is critical. Is it?

Jon

Yes, it is important. The attached shows which way round they should be:

Hi Jon. I would've thought that it would be obvious if you put them on the wrong way 'round as the "flow" of the ventilation holes would be going backwards - as you turn the wheel forward...? (Or am I being thick...?)

Adrian.

Thanks to this post I have just checked my XJS which has had EBC discs fitted to the front and yes you guessed it they are on the WRONG sides so I will now have to change them, I checked with EBC just to be sure and no choice.[:(]

And if it's that important that I have to go and change them round (only the fronts, the rears haven't got a directional pattern), having only done a couple of hundred miles, am I going to have to swap the pads over as well? Is it really not my week?!

If you've only done a couple of hundred miles, I wouldn't worry about the pads - they should be fine whichever way you put them back.

I don't think I've ever seen 996 rear disks without cross-drilling. Are they 996 or Boxster disks?

Now you mention it I can't see a pattern of the rear either.

Either that or it's one of those patterns that you've got to stare at for a few hours before you can make it out! [:D]

Only the fronts are directional

There are left and right handed parts so two different part numbers

For the std C2 & C4
Left 996.351.405.01
Right 996.351.406.01

The rear only has a single part that fits both sides 996.352.401.04

It is important to get them turning in the right direction because they are internally vented. The 'vanes' turn with the wheel and scoop air into the disks to help cool them down. If they are turning the wrong way the air will not be able to enter the vanes and so will not be able to help cool the disks down.
