New Engine-- Should I expect Ext. Waranty Rebate???

insatiable

Porsche have agreed to fit a new engine under my extended waranty which expires in Oct.
I assume the new engine will have a 2 year waranty which then begs the question " what should the next years extended waraty cost for the rest of the car"?
Has anybody been down this track?
What would be a reasonable % of waranty to allocate to the engine or conversely apply to the rest of the car?
I haven't broached this with Porsche yet until I can get a feel for any previous history.
I appreciate any help I can get on this!!

You can expect it but I don't think you'll get it unless you take out further extended warranty. That's my understanding of it.

I don't know if it specifically applies to Porsche, but my experience with other manufacturers is that parts replaced under a manufacturers warranty are covered by the original warranty terms and not extended by virtue of the new parts. If you had paid for the new parts yourself they would then be covered by an individual warranty on those parts alone.

My guess is that you will have no success in negotiating any special terms for an extension to the warranty.

The above response is correct.
Your replacenent reconditioned / remanufactured engine will only be warrantied until Oct when your warranty expires.

And yes, it will be a remanufactured unit unit...only new engines are fitted to cars with defective units during the manufacturers warranty period.

Dave / Jaqueline (?) - What is the source of this tidbit?

Which bit JCB?

Replacement engines out of manufacturers warrantY being "less than brand spanking new" Or, that the warranty on that part lasts onlty for as long as the period of the original extended warranty?

In either case, as a result of having a replacement engine fitted during an extended warranty. Info given by Aberdeen OPC on engines - and warranty period by same OPC and Porsche GB.

Personally, I wasn't overly worried about a re-manufactured engine being fitted. Apparently pretty much everything is scrapped apart from the crankcase/block and is rebuilt with new parts including ancillaries.

What I do find a little alarming (and it's only what I've picked from another on-line source) is that Porsche will only provide 1 engine replacement in the cars life. It's not confirmed.
How that would work if the car was sold on having had a replacement engine, and a subsequent renewal was needed - could be a nasty shock for the next owner.

I repeat, simply a snippet I've gleaned from elsewhere and is not confirmed

Hi
I had a new engine fitted under warranty about 4 months into my car's life. The factory warranty will expire 1st Oct so I have booked it in a fortnight for a full service, inspection and PEW despite the engine still being under factory warranty u til 19th Jan 2007.
I have spoken with my OPC and they tell me that the Engine would retain full factory warranty until 19th Jan.
However, there are other things apart from engine matters that can go wrong, so I have elected to keep matters as bullet-proof as possible and take out the PEW.
It's peace of mind and for £750 (including breakdown assistance) isn't that bad at all, esp when you compare it to the likes of TVR extended warranty.
Personally, I'd just bite the bullet and accept that if you want the peace of mind, you'll have to pay up - or take a gamble![;)]

Thanks folks for comments to date.
I think I will just put a discount request to them on the basis that the new replacement engine with or without an Extended Warranty has it's own Warranty therefore my contribution toward the Ext .Warranty is only for the remainder of the car. I suppose if you don't you don't get!!
Cheers,
Glenn

Rob, thanks for comment.
Just curious though, what was the cause of your engine failure?
Mine was a Jack Shaft bearing which damaged the housing.

Hi Glenn
I suspect either intermediate shaft or cylinder problem, but I can't get a definitive answer out of them! They had replaced the engine just before I bought it at 1100 miles - the good news is that it hasn't missed a beat since (touch wood!).

PS - I suppose if you're in NZ or Oz is must be just turning Spring, so hope you have a fab summer 'top down' down under![:D]

Thanks Rob,
Yep, the trees are just breaking bud and the days are definitely getting longer! However living on the coast half way between Sydney & Brisbane means the winters are not too painfull --Av.day 16Cent.nights maybe 9. Top down country definitely except it's sometimes too B----y hot in the summer.
Glad your car is running well. Oh! how I miss mine, still hopefully a couple more weeks should see her home again.
Cheers,
