NEW EXHAUST

My C4 O.E. switchable sports exhaust was replaced last summer with a Dansk switchable. Very satisfied with the sound and the operation.

Hi,

I need to change my exhaust as well.

I popped into design911 a few weeks ago to discuss this designtek exhaust with them.

It will cost around £2500 to supply and fit. The valve works on a key ring and not a switch on the dash board.

They did explain that the job requires 6 hours labour due to the wiring required as well as the exhaust fit.

Perhaps we can negotiate a better deal for 2?

Regards

Gerry

£2500 is nuts. I had the designtek valvetronic system fitted in summer 2016. The labour was somewhere in the region of £340 plus the cost of the system, which I think was about £650. I believe the fitting time was about 3.25 hours.

Edit - Ok. I should qualify my comment: I have just noticed that the package referred to in the link in the original question includes the CAT, which would raise the parts cost considerably

Hi David,

Yes the cat is included but you only paid £1000 all in. Is the cat really worth £1500.

Gerry

I guess if you don't need the cat then the answer is no.

I bought the muffler and valvetronic system only. I had no need for a new cat.

Thanks all for your responses, appreciate it. Nothing is ever simple as recently the drivers side tail pipe and connector to the muffler dropped off (somewhere heading South on the A3!).

The only reason I am considering replacing the whole exhaust system is because it is heavily corroded but I will also have to buy another rhs tail pipe which increases the price of the whole package. I cant seem to source a reasonably priced tip even through the breakers.

As I have to get another tail pipe anyway, I am thinking of doing this for the time being and holding off on the exhaust package just to buy some time as I really cant justify the spend.

Taking your comments from the top;

I would prefer a Dansk system but cant seem to get hold of one at present and they appear a lot more expensive then the Designtek. What are your thoughts on this and does the Dansk switchable work with the standard switch on the dash?

I agree the cost of the labour fitting the Designtek sounds excessive if the kit is £1200. I am not mad about the idea that the switch on the dash doesn't work with this kit. I have also read reviews that the quality of the Designtek systems are not great, any thoughts on this?

I agree, whichever system we go for, perhaps we can get a deal if we bought 2.

Where to go with this now???

Hi,

Eurocarparts have regular sales offering discounted prices for Dansk exhausts and other parts. Last week they had a 'SPOOKY80' sale with really good discounts for Halloween (although not 80%).

I will keep my eye and see if they have anything similar coming up.

You would then need to find somewhere willing to fit it.

I have read that Dansk suffer problems with the 'concertina' section of their design as well so a bit of research might be worthwhile.

thanks Gerry, it must be just me but every time I go on Eurocarparts I can never find anything for the porker. From recollection it asks for my registration and returns nil parts.

I've read mixed comments of the Dansk. Many 996'ers have gone for Dansk and it appears they are extremely happy with cost vs. sound. I've also read about drone at certain speeds, whether this is down to quality or just a bad batch. The switchable is a cheaper option than OEM. My only concern would be reliability in the long-term of Dansk v OEM switchable. There are some other manufacturers, but they are costly.

After much research I went for Miltek (these are not switchable). In my view offer best of both worlds, being fairly 'muted' at lower rpm, but bark on throttle and settle down once cruising without any drone. They are more expensive, but well made, British and have a long history in performance - I got mine from EuroCarParts. Black Friday is soon upon us, so you may be able to get a deal, if you look about for any system you choose.

Hi Seb,

You do have the option to manually input your car type instead of using the reg finder option.

There are plenty ofnPorsche parts once you get in.

Gerry

My Dansk switchable mufflers were fitted at Wrightune in Wallingford, Oxon. The original dashboard switch works just like on the factory fitted sports exhaust. They were sourced from EuroCarParts. They sound great in soft or (particularly) loud mode and work just like the originals.

Hi all,

Just popped into design911 for a quote. If anyone is still interested they will supply and fit both valvetronic mufflers and the fitting kit, all the electrics etc for £1392 if i can get two other parties interested.

Hi Gerry, remind me, am I right in saying this does not work with the pse switch on the dash but works via a fob?

Hi,

Yes that is correct. The design tek valvetronic system works on a key fob and not a dash button. They charge for 7 hours fitting which seems a lot for two mufflers. However, he explained that the majority of that time is involved in wiring up the valvetronic system and hiding wires etc.

The Dansk option that Pattersonoxford mentioned is a direct dansk muffler replacement for the original porsche switchable exhaust system.

He must have already had the PSE system with dash board switch fitted.

I also spoke to wrightune. They recalled fitting the exhaust and said Dansk only made 3 copies. They are trying to source something similar for me but he thinks it will be very difficult.

I think I will wait and see what reductions eurocarparts have on mad friday.

Gerry

The genuine PSE is a nice, but expensive, option. The kit is about £2750 plus fitting, and it is a long job. Wiring up the switch takes as long, if not longer, than fitting the mechanical parts. The Dansk PSE exhausts are a good substitute for when the a genuine system needs replacing, as they use the same fittings and actuators as the genuine system. As Gerry has found, they are very limited in supply, as they only make a few small batches a year. Fitting the genuine PSE electrical parts with the Dansk silencers doesn't work out any cheaper, as the electrical bits are very expensive if bought individually, and you still have the fitting time/cost.
