New glass conversion hood

Hi All,

Just thought I would mention that today I had a new glass conversion hood fitted at Carhood Warehouse in Chessington, Surrey. My 2002 Boxster S had the original blue hood with the larger plastic rear window but I decided to replace as a precaution. The job was £650 all in which I think is pretty reasonable and I now have a smaller glass rear window so no more "Boxster Chop" for me. I have a working heated rear window too [:D]

The bonding on the rear glass window is known as Ultramaxx and has a lifetime guarantee in addition to a 1 yesr warranty on the new hood. The guys at Carhood Warehouse are excellent, I would recommend to anyone.

One interesting point they made was not to treat the hood with anything! I see lots of threads about what to use to treat the hood and waterproof it. They told me this was totally unnecessary and frequent application of some of the products available can actually be harmfull to the hood. They have replaced hoods on 6 year old Boxsters (987) because of excessive application of products that has resulted in damage to the hood. They say the Mohair hood needs to breath so clogging it up with products is not advised. It is not necessary to have water "beading" on the hood, sealing it like you might wish on paintwork. They advised using a soft clothes brush to clean and a damp cloth with a dilute solution of washing up liquid to remove stains.

I certainly won't be wasting any more money on AutoGlym soft top products or any of the alternatives. The new hood looks great with glass too and makes my old 986 look a little more modern [;)]

Had similar conversion carried out by Chessington - also recommending no treatment for at least two years.
