Hi, my name is Joe and I have just joined this forum although I have yet to own a Porsche. this is where I need your advice and guidance. I am looking to buy my first Porsche, a 997 C4S Gen 2 convertible. I have saved hard over the last few years and don't want to end up buying a dodgy one that I end up loosing money on. I want to know how to buy, what to look out for and what I should insist on in regards to warranty etc. I would also appreciate any leads or dealers that I can approach who have a good reputation that will look after me. my budget that I would like to spend is 45k but can go up slightly for the right car. this is my dream purchase, please any advice will be appreciated.

kind regards

Hi Joe and welcome.
For my money I would look to purchase from a Porsche Centre. Yes, they may be a few grand more than elsewhere but they will come with a two year warranty for your peace of mind. There won't be a lot of service history as the cars are only serviced every two years but check to see it has been done. The Gen 2 has no major issues to look out for. Happy hunting!

Hi ,

I was in exactly the same position as you last year. I was after the same car with the same budget and once again I had been saving for years and it was a one time opportunity to own my dream car.
I had a very specific spec in mind and knew exactly what I wanted. I had considered OPC with a warranty (usually out of my budget with the spec I wanted) , buying privately with either transferable warranty or paying for 111 point check and the warranty myself or from a reputable specialist with either an aftermarket warranty or some residual Porsche warranty.
After looking a dozens of cars and walking away because either the spec wasnt right or I wasn't happy I finally found the right car and bought it in December. I had paid for 111 point checks on previous possibles and still walked away because of what I found.
All I can tell you is that when I found the right car I just went with my gut. It was a low milage gen2 car with a great history. It was from a lesser known but well respected independant and I only got a 6 month aftermarket warranty on the car. A big factor was the history of the car and the fact that pre purchase it had been to Leicester Porsche for a service and they were able to give me a full report and put my mind at rest before buying the car of a lifetime.
Its early days yet and no warranty may yet bite me in the arse but I thought I would share my experience.
If you know what you want and you do the research and don't buy the first car you see and don't compromise on what you want then I think when you find the right one ; you will know its the right car.

Oh and if your wondering if finally owning what you have craved for so long is an anti climax....

Every time I walk into the garage I still grin like a kid at Christmas.

Buy a car that still has some Porsche warranty on it and full OPC service history. Doesn't have to be from an OPC as the warranty is transferable. Then before the warranty expires you can get the 111 point check done and anything outstanding can be repaired under warranty. Then you can have the choice whether or not to buy a new warranty.

I have recently bought a Gen II privately. They are great cars with little to worry about as all the previous gremlins seem to finally have been sorted.

Buy from an OPC, you get a two year proper Porsche warranty, at 45k you may struggle but if you find one chances are it will be one of the first and the original warranty will have expired so the OPC with two years is the way to go. No one understands Porsches like Porsche!
Don't know what you've driven before but your in for a treat.

Hi Joe
You might like to look at Harbour Cars Chichester website http://www.harbourcars.com

I sold my 997 to them and found them very professional. Specialise in low mileage one owner stock. OPCs only seemed to interested in buying trade in stock so some of the best Porsche's can be found in the independent dealer network.
