New member and help needed with broken car

Hello all, I am new on here as I have just bought myself a 88 lux. It is very clean but I have only had it 48hrs and its broke. I was pulling away and just selected 2nd gear, when their was a very load bang followed by lots more. It sounds like the UJ has gone, but not sure until I get the car home. |Is the UJ a week point or do you have any views what it could be? The car still selects all gears but every turn of the wheels it bangs and cant be driven. Cheers for any help.

First thing to do is jack up the rear end and gently rotate each wheel to try and pin point where the damage is.

As you probably know, the gear box is at the back and feeds the power to the wheels by a driveshaft on each side going straight to each rear wheel. At the end of each shaft is a CV joint under a rubber boot, these are a very common wear and tear item and are easily replaced if this is your problem

Call Bert Gear at Berlyn Services on Monday and he will send you a new kit with splined bolts and grease to make a full repair

I think you're spot on with the diagnosis except that maybe it's been replaced and the old bolts used. I know several people who have done that only to find the thing coming off pretty soon after.

I hope it's what Paul and Fen suggest, but I fear there's a small chance you could also be describing ring and pinion failure too. They're exactly the same symptoms I've experienced in the past. One blessing is that even if it is this replacement gearboxes aren't expensive or difficult to come by.
Best regards,
Peter

Been under the car all morning and I think Peters right, so if anyone has a nice gearbox they would like to sell, let me know.
Have it up on stands and with engine on and in gear one wheel turns and the other trys to. Then it sticks and I get a nice loud sort of click.
This is my first 944 and I am not used to working on rear drive cars, so any help would be great.

Will the diff still be ok?

Theres one on ebay for buy it now £150(item 290087555349..not me selling it!).I would think you would pick one up reasonably cheap to fix the problem[;)]
Best of luck
Alan

Erm, well I feel guilty saying this now having suggested that this might be the fault, but I do have one available.

The box is from an S but works nicely in a Lux (I used it in mine prior to the 3L swap). It has slightly longer ratios but I found I preferred them anyway, doesn't seem to slow acceleration and naturally lets you hold the gears longer. It had a good gear change and is pretty quiet too.

It's taking up space and with my recent expenditure I'd let it go for a very reasonable price, PM for more details if you're interested (it's located in Aylesbury, Bucks). You can even have the option of returning it within a week or so in case your fault turns out to be something else.

I have ruled out the prop or any UJ as car sounds fine when not in gear and I have realised the prop turns all the time even when the car is not in gear. All the cv joints are fine, so I guess that just leaves the gearbox or clutch and all the nasty sounds are coming from the back so it must be gearbox. Looking at it, it seems a easy job apart from gear linkage, so any tips wil be helpful.

The guy I bought the car off was a full member on here and said you guys were helpful, thanks again for all the help.

Hi sorry to hear about your gearbox trouble! i am not too clued up on the lux model but i own an 88 S i would say the gearbox is simular, i have yesterday removed y gearbox and found a 12mm bold that connects the selector rod to the selector shaft right over the box, place the car in 4th remove the bolt push the gearnob forward in what would be 3rd and you should be disconected.......note remember to remove the coupler while you can still select the gears and turn the road wheels as i found the method described in the haynes workshop manual didnt work with my car....

I dont take any notice of the haynes manual when doing major stuff as it isnt very acurate and only a basic guide[&:]

Hey cococola, I agrree completly use the manual as a guide not a rule, ps your car looks great mate, c ya.........

I have just spent 4hrs under the car trying to remove the gearbox. I can't get the shift rod out of the gearbox. I have removed the bolt that holds it to the gear selector and removed it at the other end from the shifter. Even if I push the rod all the way forward until it hits the plastic surround around the shifter, it's still not enough to remove it from the gearbox. Clark's garage recommends turning the rod round, but mine will only turn 90 degrees and I can't see how this will help. Anyone any ideas? []

I'm currently replacing the clutch in mine and have the gearbox out at the moment so all is fresh in my mind. To slide the shift rod forward you must remove the shifter. It is bolted onto the torque tube with 2 bolts (13mm socket + extension to remove them). Once the shifter is removed, the foam around the opening needs to be prised away from the bodywork. The shift rod can then be rotated 180° and pulled forward, through where the foam sits, about a foot to disengage it from the gearbox at the rear.
