My C4S also makes a whining noise. It disappears when my wife is not accompanying me!

Hi All,

Sorry if this has already been covered elsewhere and I have missed it as this is my first post :)

Having bought my Cayman S (Gen 2) and been loving it, as it now has circa 8K on the clock, I have a couple of questions and would appreciate any advice particularly if anyone has come across this with their pride and joy...

Yesterday when idling in traffic the fan(s) or some thing else (perhaps a bearing?) has started a loud persistent whining which is equally audible from both sides of the car, inside and out and can be heard inside when the windows are up, as soon as the throttle is touched and the engine revs are increased the noise disappears until it is brought back to idle again. I have just taken the car out for a gentle run this evening and this is still present once it is warmed up and brought to idle.

I was wondering if this is a known or common issue with these engines?

Should I be concerned and straight on the phone to the nearest OPC tomorrow (which I have a feeling I might be...) as I was hoping to take advantage of the long weekend and get out for a full day?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Could be Alternator/Power Steering Belt although they usually squeal when cold, alternatively adjust position of passenger seatbelt.[:)]

As with all mid-engine layouts Simon, one of the difficulties is gaining access when something is amiss - unless you can raise the vehicle easily to investigate the problem. As Kevan says, it's likely that the sound you describe is coming from the ancilliaries - the alternator, PAS pump, belt tensioner or the belt itself. I presume that the vehicle is under warranty, so best I think to pop into the local OPC to let them investigate. Jeff
