New member, trying to remove headlights

Hello,
This is my first time on here, after I joined the club today.
I bought a very unloved 986 a few months ago, my first Porsche ever. It seems to be in a decent mechanical condition, but it's cosmetically challenged to say the least. Had great fun with the car over the summer, and it's now SORN'ed, in the garage, to hopefully end up looking decent by next spring.
I've never been working on a Porsche before, so am expecting a bit of a learning curve. In fact, I've already found a point where I'm struggling. I'm trying to remove the headlights. I've found the hex studs to turn to release the headlights, but it seems as if they are simply rotating freely, without releasing any latches inside.
Does any of you know what I am doing wrong ?
Any help is much appreciated.
Thank you

If you look in the manual it shows you the correct way to remove the healights.

You should here a loud crack turning the tool provided ( Bit Scary ) but it's unlocked you need to pull the headlight forwards to remove.

Same procedure in reverse to put back.

Consult your handbook manual will give exact instructions.

Good luck [:D]

Hi Morten,

You’re rotating the “bow” - item 10 - which engages with the headlamp unit to move it forward. Maybe the hex flats have got rounded-off, which might explain why the tool is just rotating, and you could try using some pliers to get a better purchase.

Failing that you may be able to gain access via the wheel arch once you’ve removed the liner.

Jeff

Thank you Cliff & Motorhead !

Both of your replies were very useful. The combination of a tin foil lining inside the removal tool and the confidence to aid the procedure with a bit of gentle hammer persuasion did help, both lights have now been safely removed.
