Hi all,
I took the plunge and bought a bit of a risky car last week.
I have been an almost life long Porsche fan and this is my fourth Porsche having owned a 964 Carrera 4 which was followed by a 964 Carrera 2 and latterly a 964 Turbo 3.6 which I regret selling as the price went into the stratosphere after I parted with it but never mind hindsight is a great thing.
it has been 8 years since I last owned a Porsche as needed something more practical with room for kids so been driving a variety of BMW's. 2 M3's and a 330i coupe.
The Carrera that I have just bought had been for sale for about 6 months and even though it looked lovely on the exterior I was worried why it hadn't sold. The MOT had expired in July.
I arranged for a pre sale inspection by a local independent specialist who pinpointed a few problems the biggest of which was that the car needs a new clutch, the brakes need a complete overhaul and the air con doesn't work.
I managed to negotiate with the garage who agreed to fit new discs and pads all round along with new brake pipes and new front tyres. I also managed to negotiate quite a bit off the asking price went to view and purchased the car and drove it home to Essex.
The car ran faultlessly on the 300 mile journey home apart from the really heavy clutch pedal. I have already booked the car in for an IMS upgrade along with a new clutch, flywheel and RMS.
I am not driving the car until the work is done just admiring it on the driveway. It's quite a unique car as it was a special order in Carrara white with colour coded sport techno wheels, stainless steel door entry guards and colour coded centre console including air vents. I'm looking forward to slowly improving the car as funds allow and am really happy to be a Porsche owner once again having spent this week going over the car, upgrading the PCM software and getting a new Sat Nav Disk. A new Carrera 4S badge is on order to clean up the rear and then just a good clean of the interior along with a new set of mats.
one thing I have noticed is that the onboard computer display in the instrument binnacle comes on as normal at start up but the screen then sometimes goes blank after a short period and it doesn't matter what I do with the control stalk it will not come back on until I restart the engine. Any ideas what the problem may be ????.
In the mean time I look forward to becoming part of this forum and getting a few tips on 996 ownership.
Cheers
Stu

Stu!!

Dare to be different - that's what I say. How about a photo or two?

As for your instrument cluster issue, the best thing is to get it plugged in to a Porsche diagnostic tester, to see if there are any fault codes.

By the way, it is Carrara White. (Taken from the Italian city, from where the famous white marble comes).

Hi Richard thanks for your comments and the info on the colour.
The car is having some work done next week so will ask about the OBC.
I will see if I can get a couple to of pictures to upload.
Cheers.

Hi Stu welcome to the gang. Never seen one in white before looks great love the red decals on the lid.

Thank you Tony and Pieman.

The red decal has been hand painted and a lot of the paint has now come off. It looks dreadful on closer inspection.
I am changing it back to OEM original silver with just a red 'S' at the end which is the way it came out the factory.

I don't think there were many ordered in white. I have only seen me other and that was a cabriolet.

The car is going to be a bit of a work in progress as it needs a few little niggles fixed. There is the common rattle from the roof lining, the passenger wing mirror only goes up and down and the interior needs a bit of a clean. But it's a good solid car and I look forward to slowly making it better.
