Hi guys, just thought I'd take time to introduce myself and ask a couple if questions.

I've just bought a 1984 944. It's the first Porsche I have owned and I'm treating it as a work in progress.

The first question I have is about the 4 switc
in the centre console. There is a switch that looks like it has symbol for main beam on it but no wires connected. Should it have wires or is it a dummy switch and if so what does it do?

When the car starts from cold it doesn't seem to have a fast idle and runs at about 800rpm is fine when hot but a bit lumpy on tick over from cold. Any ideas?

I'm sure these questions have been asked a million times so sorry if were going over old ground.

Hi and welcome
The switch should hvae wire to it! It is the control for the Auxiluary Driving Lights in the bumper.
Standard - rocker on dash - side lights (in bumper) then head lights, main beam switch on column -both in pods. The main beam indicator is the blue one in the clocks.
If switch in centre console is "on" the main beam also operates the driving lights in the same unit as the side lights, and the blue indicator above the clocks will light.
To "flash" in daylight hours the console switch must be on and the in bumper main beam lights will flash.
It may be the switch has been bypassed ie the bumper lights will always be on with main beam and are always ready to flash.
Mine also had a slightly slow cold tickover - new rotor arm and dizzy cured mine.

Thanks mike that sounds exactly the switch I'm talking about. I'll check they're working tomorrow if not I'll hunt for the wires and try fix it. Because I didn't get an owners manual I'm poking about in tha dark a bit.

With regards to the cold start. I've already done plugs, rotor and cap. I just felt it should have some form of fast idle when cold. It has a crappy boy racer cone filter on it which I'm going to replace when I find an original air box. Does it have a cold start sensor or anything that could be faulty?

Thanks

Craig

They have a temp sensor but it is only operative when the engine is switched on, but if it stays running and settles down in a couple of miles, I wouldn't worry.

If its easier call me - phone no below.

Mike
