928Forever!

[FONT=courier new"]Well, I'm a new member and I own a '91 'H' reg Porsche 928 5.0!

Where do I start ? I bought it... Half an hour ago!! Haha

I can't stop telling myself - I own a Porsche!

Well, here's the story:

I injured my leg a few years ago and ever since it's been pretty temperamental and driving a manual Citroén Xantia and Ford Focus hasn't really helped it, so the doctor adviced I bought an Automatic. So I mentioned this to my friend who breaks car parts, but occasionally he has a few whole cars in that don't need any/minimal work done on them. So he said he had a few Auto's.

After a 5 minute drive down there in his Automatic 1990 Jaguar XJ-S V12 (and him telling me I couldn't buy it from him!) we got to his "forecourt" (basically a muddy field hahaha )

The first car I drove was a 1992 Jaguar Daimler, and it was good but when he said he had another car for me to try I suspected it to be a Nissan Bluebird or something, but when we turned the corner I saw her... A 1991 Snow-White Porsche 928 with a 4-speed Automatic in MINT condition.

Trust me I almost fainted (wouldn't you!?)

Cut a long story short I drove it away after parting with £1,995 (mates rates, it was originally listed for £2,750! :D)

It has an alarm, immobiliser, remote locking, electric windows, electric sunroof, Air-Conditioning, ABS, Original Alloys, CD Player, the lot! This car makes the phrase "Fully Loaded" sound like an understatement!

Here's the work that's been done on it in the last 12 months by the previous owner:

New Cam-Belt, pulleys, tensioner and waterpump in January 2010: ODO Reading - 111,981. Carried out by a main Porsche dealer. Total Cost (Inc VAT) - £514.98

Aftermarket CD player fitted in December 2009. Total cost - £299.99

Alloy Refurbishment in March 2010: ODO Reading - 122,089. Carried out by a main Porsche Dealer. Total Cost (Inc VAT) - £99.99

Full Service (Spark plugs, oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter) in July 2010: ODO Reading - 129,910. Carried out by a main Porsche Dealer. Total Cost (Inc VAT) - £210.82

Full exhaust system (twin tail-pipes) in June 2010: ODO Reading - 127,666 (I know... Spooky eh ?). Carried out by a main Porsche Dealer. Total Cost (Inc VAT) - £554.95

New Serpentine Belt in Autum 2010: ODO Reading 130,019. Carried out by a main Porsche Dealer. Total Cost (Inc VAT) - £109.00

New front brake disks & pads in October 2009: ODO Reading - 98,120. Carried out by a main Porsche Dealer. Total Cost (Inc VAT) - £234.98

5X New tyres (Continental Sport) in July 2010: ODO Reading 129,550. Carried out by Kwik-Fit. Total Cost - £629.99 (Includes fitting to alloys)

New fuel tank in December 2009: ODO Reading - 105,007. Carried out by a main Porsche Dealer. Total Cost (Inc VAT) - £100.00

New windscreen wipers (including rear wiper) in July 2010. Total Cost £12.

And that is all the receipts I have for the car! As you can see the previous owner did like to keep the ole Porsche ship-shape!

Incase you were wondering the current millage is - 130,492.

The car also had some wheel arch rust professionally repaired a couple of years ago but I don't have a receipt for that.

Anyway! What do you guys think ? Sounds like a peach to me :D

I assume 'main Porsche delaer' means a Porsche independent garage - those are certainly not Porsche Centre prices !

Other than that sounds like a bargain, regular maintenance items seem to have been attended to - although i do wonder why it was so cheap (even when priced at £2750) !!

Hopefully it'll bring many days of big smiles to your face, especially as the nose lifts when you hit the gas [:D]

Welcome to the club and to the 928s!

These cars are really awesome and yours appears to have had much of the essential work done. As for the prices you quote I can only agree with the previous reply - if they really are OPC (official Porsche Centre) prices I would love to know which one it is... I will be doing the timing belt/water pump this year and the prices (10 days ago) as quoted by OPC are: £247 for the waterpump (refurbished - the new not in stock and priced at £800) and timing belt £81 (plus VATon both) plus labour at £110 per hour (plusVAT).
Anyway I know you will enjoy it and hope you don't have to visit an OPC anytime soon (if you do remember that the PCGB membership card will get you a discount on parts and labour). How about pictures?

All the best and drive on!

I think it was a smaller garage that specializes in Porsche, but I've never been there so don't hold me to that!

The car only gets an average of 16MPG, but it gets many more SMILES-per-gallon! :)

Oh yes pictures! At the moment it's all covered up to the windows in mud as it was a bit stuck on the field and needed a good lot of reving to get it free (no mud-flaps so all the mud kicked up and splattered the whole sides of the car haha!!), but once I give her a good long soapy wash and a polish I'll get some pics for you to drool over :).

She really is a Beautiful Monster (no copyright infringement on the song intended! Hehe).

Oh and I forgot to mention it has full BLACK LEATHER interior!! I love it sooooooooo much!

I can't wait to go into the pub and put those keys down with the PORSCHE keyring and see the guys faces :). Yup, Citroén guy now has a Porsche!

Just realised I need a loaf of bread... I could walk to the local shop just a few streets away... But something's telling me I'll choose to drive the Porsche to the Tesco store 20 miles away!

God, driving that beast is just so addictive!

She's definitely gonna cost me on Petrol... But who cares!

Ahh, well I'm back! Doing 40 miles in that Porsche is like doing 10 in a normal car! Well I went into Elgin (A town 20 miles from my house) to get the bread (no I wasn't joking about that! Haha) and on the way out I passed a Halfords... Yep, you can see where this is going. I got to the next Round-About and swung the car round and went back to the Halfords and pulled into the car-park! Here is what I bought:

Poppy Coral Air Freshener - £6.99
Bosche 12V Siver Car Battery - £124.99
Spare Bulb Kit (as you can't have a £65,000 Porsche with a broken brake lamp!!) - £10.99
Autoglym Ultra Deep Shine Car Polish - £12.49

So, why did I buy a car battery ? Because the current one is over 6 years old and starting to get a bit dodgy. I parked it up this morning after driving it home with a full battery, went out to Elgin an hour ago and it barely started. So I thought I'd be safe rather than sorry and buy a good quality battery and get it fitted when this rain stops pouring.

Oh and I brimmed 'er with 70 Litres of Shells finest V-Power! :)

Yes, opportunities to drive all of a sudden are very welcome. Good thinking to get new battery, but do not expect it to be the end - I am on my 3rd in 4 years! (1st one Bosch, the other 2 Porsche). Someone will no doubt correct me but batteries and flat batteries are a bit of a usual issue on Porsches - although I have not personally experienced this it is said that if you don't drive the car for a week or so you can expect a flat battery. The fuel: I used to use Shell V-Power until it was pointed out to me that Tesco do a higher octane (99) - have now happily used Tesco 99 for several years. There was, of course, the scare about Tesco fuel problems - I have not had that experience so can say nothing about it.

All the best

Yes Tesco Momentum-99 ?

I use that for my Citroén Xantia and Ford Focus, I wasn't sure if it would be OK for the Porsche though, as it's cheaper than Shells well known V-POWER.

That's the one I use (except it was just plain 99 until they re-branded it) and have used for several years. The fact is that the 928 doesn't even specifically need 99 octane - memory serves it has to be higher than 93/95 octane. Tesco is cheaper and you get Tesco points. If you will continue using Shell they also have a points scheme so do sign up for it - the points will add up soon enough!

All the best

Well I've just brimmed the tank yesterday with Shell V-POWER. But next time it gets to the empty mark I'll fill it up with MOMENTUM.

I never let mine get below 70 mls range (about a quarter of a tank) - I just don't want any problems with it trying to suck up the last drop.

Well with my 2 Litre Xantia and 1.6 Litre Focus I usually let it go RIGHT down to the empty mark, sometimes a bit past it before I fill up.

Is it really bad to let the Porsche go right down to almost empty ?

Since I have never tried it I couldn't say. It is, I think, generally accepted wisdom that it's not a good idea. I certainly don't want to find out how quickly the 5.4l engine will go through a quarter of a tank! I equally don't think I'd get much sympathy with my 928 stranded by the side of the road out of fuel... Well, that's the way I look at it.

All the best

Sorry, was thinking of mine, but I doubt 0.4l would make a huge difference in terms of fuel usage.

By the by, as you probably know, David is the 928 section Secretary here and he has written a hugely informative book on the 928 - it's a must, I think, and very reasonably priced.

That sounds like a bargain especially for a later one with alot of the required work done recently.

I'm looking to buy one in the £2,500-£3,000 bracket which will hopefully get a reasonably mechanically sound S2.

Have fun, its sounds like you are so far.

Sounds fun and what an excellent part of the world to use it -BTW, if you see a local coastguard in a new Westfield, I delivered it to him as a kit a few months ago!!

Here are some useful contacts you will need:

Paul Anderson -928 Spares

Richard Armstrong -Ritech Systems Aircon Refurbishment

And most important of all:
