NEW OR OLD?

Hi

I've been wanting a Boxster S for ages now but I can't make my mind up as to which year to get. I mean between a Facelift 2003 (which will no doubt have 50k miles on it) and a low mileage 2000 / 2001.

I have around 20k at the moment and so am undecided as to whether I should carry on saving for another 6 / 12 months or would a one owner 2000 Boxster with say 30,000 miles be just as good?

Is the facelift worth the extra 4 or 5k?

Has anyone owned both versions, if so I would like to hear your views, I plan to keep the car for a while so the right car is important.

Anyway, nice to meet you all and hopefully I"˜ll be one of the Boxster clan very soon"¦

There are 2 notable differences between the pre and the facelift.

1) Minor visual differences, i.e bumpers, rear spoiler, etc.
2) Glass rear screen.

I had a 2002 (pre) version and surprisingly managed for 3 years in all seasons without worrying about being able to see out of the rear window at times. (You get used to it when you have effective heated mirrors). Also you live with having to do the Boxster chop when you put the top down.

The glass (that I have in my current one) makes opening the top a lot easier and I don't have to worry when or at what temperature I can put the hood down. So overall I would say the glass rear screen is a great improvement but if your talking thousands of pounds in difference I may well question if it was worth the extra wait and the money.

If I could wait and lets face it, it's still winter, then I think I would but then the prices would rise slightly as they are more attractive in the summer.

If your desperate to get one now then a pre-facelift is not to be sniffed at, if you aren't desperate then maybe waiting a little longer and getting the facelift might be the right choice. Alternatively a face-lift 2.7?

2.7s are great fun as a lot of folk will confirm. That's what I had.

I found my self in a similar position to you about 6 months ago, looking at pre-facelift S versus a facelift 2.7. After quite a bit of searching I eventually went for a low mielage 02 plate 3.2S as I was quite prepared to live with a pre-facelift car for the extra bit of power.

In addition to some nice styling updates the main benefit of the facelift was the change from a plastic to glass rear screen, this is something worth taking in to account as the plastic screen can be a bit of a pain (boxster chop, potential to split if used when the weather is too cold, etc).

If you are certain it's the 3.2 S you want and you can stretch that little bit extra for a facelift S then it is probably going to be worth it. If not, I wouldn't hesitate about buying a pre-facelift car and enjoting lots of top down driving during the summer.

I 'm sure you will find either a fantastic car, I certainly am enjoying mine.

Hi there, i was in the same prediciment just over a month ago. After spending time reading up on all the models, good things bad things, and just a general, whats best for me, i opted for a MY03 Boxster S, of to which i am over the moon with, she has over average miles but the bulletproof full service, and also comes with the 12 month warrenty, so very happy!!
Good look and let us know which you decide to go for................

Thanks Guys,

I must admit the plastic rear screen is bothering me; when you say cold, how cold?

Can you really not see through it?

Not considered a 2.7 because I know I will be wondering, should I have gone for the 3.2 ..... [8|]

I have also read about leaking doors etc, is this as preverlant on the my03?

Thanks
H

You could buy mine and with the extra £1500 you could have a glass rear screen fitted, best of both worlds !

In all honesty I can see your point and only you can answer the question, When I bought this I went for an older 3.2s as I use to have an Impreza and didn't want to drop too much BHP also by buying from a OPC I got a warranty( theres a thought you could use the £1500 to get a Porsche warranty and still have change).
So in short I could have had a 2.7 TWO years younger but glad I didn't as I been very happy with the 3.2 its brilliant.
I'm sure what ever you chose you will be happy and the Boxster is a great 1st Porsche to have.

Let me know if you want any Photos !.

Thanks Hannu

I have a part exchange so unfortunatly I don't have the 18500k in cash.... shame cos I like yellow and so does the wife!

The plastic screen clouds up as the surface reacts with whatever part of the atmosphere it takes a shine to (or not as the case may be [:D]). It comes up a treat with the Porsche product. However you have to be a contortionist to clean the inside and it's very easy to get the fabric messed up. In general the plastic screen is a real pain in the butt to keep in A1 condition.

Over time the screen will go cloudy and start to split along the fold line - mine is just starting to go right at the very edges.

If it feels chilly don't attempt to lower the hood - cold enough to make your breath visible.

The only people who think that if they buy a 2.7 it will mean they spend the rest of their lives thinking "Should I have bought a 3.2?" are those people who have never owned one.

Most 3.2 owners are constantly struggling with the fact that they could have "made do" with a 2.7. They are all in a state of denial of course! [8D]

Interesting thoughts on the S v 2.7, is the S a lot faster? I mean in real world driving when you want to put your foot down (between cameras!) do you think its really that much differant? I am a status whore though and I seriously think I would regret getting a 2.7 over a 3.2. Sad I know but I am sure I am not alone on this...

Tony,
I have a Clio sport 197 my56 with 3.5k on the clock. I got it for the wife to potter in during the week and me to thrash at the weekends. But I have waited long enough for me Boxster and can see the sumer fast approching [8D]
Looking at the Add I don't think he will be interested in my little rocket.

I'd go for a late, low mileage, post facelift 2.7. If you have never owned a Boxster before, you will not find it slow. The S is faster, makes a better noise, has a 6 speed box etc etc but this does not make the 2.7 any less of a car. Besides, whatever you get, there will always be a nagging thought about what else you could have got for another grand or so. Forget that - just put what you have towards the newest, best maintained and highest specced car your budget will allow. You will not regret it.

Upgrading in a few years time is inevitable - just enjoy the journey!

IMO No but I've no doubt a bucketful of people will tell you different.

You have to bear in mind that there is now quite a difference between an original 2.7 and the latest 3.4 in terms of horsepower and that there are quite a few variations in the 2.7 and 'S' along the way.

Hi Hobzy,

Why don't you sell the Clio privately ? puts you in a far better position to buy wherever you go. Dealers wont give you the best price if trading in unless your going for a new Clio.
If you buy from a dealer you will probably get more knocked off the asking price than you would lose selling yours private!.

Just a thought !
