New owner - help needed

Hello all

I've just bought a Midnight Blue 1993 C2 from No 5 Garage in Acton. I have a few newbie questions - can you help:

1. Can anyone tell me what this bolt is supposed to be for (on the RHS below the air con unit)?

2. I can guess what two of these dash switches are for (on front facia) but the other two (underside facia) are not that obvious. Can anyone confirm what these four are supposed to do (assuming the two underside switches are standard)?

3. I was quite suprised that the louvres of the engine lid are open and allow water etc onto the top of the engine. Does this make it unwise to use any form of pressure washer when washing the car? Is an aftermarket rain tray available / necessary? Is it difficult to prevent the engine from corroding and aren't the electrical connections vulnerable?

Cheers

Robert,

I can't help on the bolt near the air con unit. That compressor looks different to mine since it's not a standard Porsche item - your CCU isn't integrated with the aircon from the looks of it. I wonder if the bolt could be part of the belt tension adjustment??

As far as the dash bits are concerned (I assume you don't have a drivers manual - they are all described in there) the rotating knob at the top is either the dial illumination rheostat or the wiper delay (there should be one each side. The functions swap over between LHD and RHD). The switch on the front of the facia is the intensive washer switch. There is a similar switch on the other side for the rear wiper (if you have one). The switches under the dash are the mirror selector (joystick on the door for mirror movement) and the other is to adjust the clock.

The louves on the engine lid are supposed to be open but you'll only get water in there if you wash it or stand still long enough. The critical engine electrics are pretty well protected and the spark plugs are really low down. Any rain will get evaporated in seconds once the engine is warm.

Hope that clears it up. BTW - Welcome to 964 ownership!!! I hope you enjoy it. There's lots of help here if you need it.

Regards

Dave

The switch under the dash may be the switch to open the sunroof. I'd have thought that the clock adjuster would be next to the clock on the other side, but as Dave mentions, things may get swapped over from RHD to RHD cars, and mine is LHD.

I pressure wash mine, no issues yet, and I've been doing it for nearly three years...

Andy,

I'm sure you're right. When I said "other" I actually meant "on the other side of the steering wheel". I guess it's really a "push it and see" issue!!!

Cool, thanks. The sunroof switch was working intermittently but was a pretty easy repair and the mirror switch works fine. Everything else seems OK apart from the occasional phantom 'bonnet open' warning light which I'm hoping will be an easy fix.

I didn't get an owners' manual with the car unfortunately - I'm keeping an eye out on ebay although I've got to pop into Type 911 in Beckenham next Sat to pick up some bits and bobs so I might get one whilst I'm there.

And you're quite right Dave - the bolt adjusts the belt tension by moving the compressor laterally when you release the clamp bolts and it is indeed an aftermarket unit.

Cheers

Robert,

You got me now!! A phantom "bonnet open" warning light eh??? As far as I'm aware there ain't no "bonnet open" warning light - so you might have got the pictogram confused with something else. Describe where the warning light is (in the clock probably - between which numbers??) and maybe we can figure it out!!

Regards

Dave

It's the one that's between 12 and 1 (I think) and has a picture of the car side on with an arrow pointing at the engine lid (didn't really mean 'bonnet') - what's it supposed to mean and when does it normally light up / go out Dave?

That's the wing failing to raise warning light, if I remember rightly......

Robert,

Mel's right. The light should come on with the ignition and go out almost as soon as the car moves forward. If it stays on it would indicate a problem with the spoiler control or the speedo signal. I have to say, it could be a problem that's associated with bad connections on the PCB in the back of the clock. There is a 15-pin connector to which the wiring harness connects and the pins are rivetted to the printed circuit board. Over time the rivetted connections seem to become dry jointed or high resistance and cause problems - usually with the spoiler light and the battery charge circuit. Most OPCs/Independents will recommend a new clock (at £150 or so) but the problem can be overcome quite easily by removing the PCB and resoldering the 15 pins on the back-side of the PCB. You need to be adept with a soldering iron and solder sucker but it takes about 10 minutes to fix it.

It's worth confirming that the spoiler does go up and down as it should (up at around 50mph and down at anything from 15mph to 0 (depends on year of the car).

Hope that helps.

Regards

Dave

Thanks Dave - the spoiler seems to raise and lower at the correct speeds. If the light is supposed to stay on after starting the car until you reach a certain speed (even if very slow), it may well be functioning as it's supposed to - I may have misdiagnosed this as a sporadic 'phantom' warning. I will check it out next time I take the car out.

I've read the procedure for fixing the clock light gremlins on the technical section of ttp://www.porsche964.co.uk - if there is a problem, I will dig the soldering iron out and see how many fingers I can burn...

Cheers
