New owner of a 993 :) 2 Questions

Hi all,

After several weeks of looking I've finally found the 993 for me, bought just up the road here in Norfolk from another PCGB member! It's a Carrera 2, Silver/Black, and is in very nice condition having only done 29k miles.

There are a couple of things I need to do, one is the engine lid isn't staying up, and also I'd like some clear lenses.

Regarding the engine lid hydraulic lifts, is this something I could order from somewhere and do myself (second hand maybe), or do I need to get a Porsche Specialist on this?

On the clear lenses, I wouldn't mind buying second hand as it may merge in more with the car, but new would also be OK. I've seen plenty of places that sell these but is there somewhere that does them cheaper than everyone else?

Cheers, Alex

Hi,
Dont use second hand struts, waste of money, buy new ones from any porsche spares supplier, Type 911 or Design 911 both do good quality struts and you can fit yourself .
Clear lenses can be bought from the same places, Mathew at Type 911 is probably the cheapest that I found although there are others the quality is not good.[:)]

Hood struts are an easy replacement, P-car site ( http://p-car.com/diy/hoodshock/ ) has a good run through but ignore the bit about the bottom connection on the front struts if you're doing them as well. The bottom of the front struts are a push fit rather having a circlip; lever the bottom clip out with a protected screwdriver or similar. Don't get the heavy duty struts for the rear as the lid will open with too much force and possibly twist it [].

Struts are around £12 - £15 each from any decent Porsche place (excluding OPC's [;)]) and will take about five minutes a side to do the fronts and around 10 or 15 minutes a side at the rear (the rears are more awkward to get to, especially the body mounted one on the nearside)

Also watch for repro clear front indicators, they're much cheaper than OE but not sure about the quality. New OE's are around £46 a side from Jasmine, Design 911, etc. With a low mieage car like yours second hand ones may look a bit out of place?

Thankyou very much for that, I've taken all your advice and bought new everything from Type911, and that web link will be very handy!

Buy new lenses if you can. This way they are less likely to be nicked!

My replacement 2nd hand mirrors had the wires cut - mmmhhh. Obviously I cant say where they were from!!!

I bought new clear lenses for my 993 some years ago and they look great when they first went on (and still do). They will also weather quite quickly, therefore, which means they won't necessarily stand out.

Sounds like you got a great low mileage car.
