New owner question...

As I've already bought the car, this might be a silly question but how do I check if the engine in my car is original to the car?

:)

Thanks

The engine number is stamped on the top right side of the crankcase near the fan cowl. This should match the number on the vehicle ID sticker in the service book & the sticker under the bonnet if it is still there.

Hmm they don't seem to match, could you tell me which number they should match?

The engine number starts *62M-----*

The sticker has an engine code number on it, this starts M64-- ...

Worried now...

Sounds like you're reading the sticker wrong. M64/-- is the type of engine fitted to the car. See here for the three different codes for the N/A engine types:

http://www.964uk.com/html/Spec%20-%20Engine%2036na.htm

62M----- is the right code for the engine serial number. That code is a 1991 model year engine. As you can't find it on the sticker, check it against the number on the V5 as mentioned above.

p.s. Well done for finding the engine number...even with Rob's instructions above, many still can't find it on the engine, mostly because the air con is in the way. [:D]

Thanks Steve, where would I find it on the sticker? Thanks for all the advice guys it's very kind of you all.

From the top you should have chassis number then engine type (you've already found the M64/--) and then engine number and gearbox number (next to each other) in small numbers/letters underneath. I can't absolutely confirm this because mine is one of those rebel sticker-less ones that should be avoided like the plague!

On the sticker it is the 3rd line. It will read something like M6401-62M G5003. The number on the engine will read *62MXXXXXX*

I should have added that the engine number itself is not on the VIN sheet, its only the engine type and year, M6401 being the type, 62M being 6 cylinder normally aspirated built in 1991. The actual number of the engine the car was built with is I believe available only from Porsche.

Darren, have you compared the number to the V5? I believe if there are any changes to Chassis, engine, etc they would appear in section 3 special notes on the front page. So if there is nothing there and both engine numbers match (car and V5) you can be confident it's the original engine.

As Rob says, for peace of mind you can get a letter of origin. Contact Ann Burnham at Porsche Cars Great Britain Ltd (0118 9191744). It costs about £60 IIRC. I decided to get one seeing as the stickers on mine went AWOL before I bought it.

Darren, you are welcome. Enjoy your car, there is a learning curve to owning these cars.. I'm still on it! but it is an enjoyable experience and the owners offering advice are a knowledgeable and friendly bunch. Cheers. Rob
