New Owner Questions (Part 1)

Here we go then for starters
1) Is the diff really that grumbly, especially going slowly in reverse or 1st gear. Or have a bought a pup?
2) Gearlever top is worn. Is there an RS version or will a standard replacement one fit?
3) Likely cause of a slight knock from inside drivers door on right handers (LHD)?
4) Thoughts on the factory halfcage - good or bad? I love the looks but dont want to make it too much stiffer. (but thats probably the point)

1. Diff is grumbly. A change in gearbox oil can reduce this (I use Mobil somethingorother and there is almost no noise)
2. So is mine. Don' t have the answer

4. Always good to have a ' cage, especially if you do a few track days. Also looks the biz.
 
1. Peter right the diffs make an assortment of noises - different oils do make a difference, Colin Belton at 9meister can give you an idea of some of the alternatives.
2. Dunno, if its just the top your replacing std one should be ok but actual gear leaver is shorter.
3. Could be all sorts, loose bolt or the lock actuating rod come out the rubber guide - take the trim off & drive round for a bit see it its anything obvious.
4.Whats wrong with stiff? Probably won' t have much effect unless its welded in - I wouldn' t expect it to affect ride stifness much at all except maybe if you run slicks at track days.

Just an echo of other posts really.
yes the diff makes all sorts of worrying noises and yes it can be quietened down with certain oils.
the gear stick is if my memory is correct longer/taller although the throw is shorter and it' s offset. This means that changing it will alter the shift if you don' t go for an RS fit.
I seem to remember the clunky door on a C2 we owned. Never found out what it was but would guess it' s quite common, so someone should have the answer.
There is really no such thing as a bolt in cage. All cages normally require a weld in fixing/spreader plate. The cage is then bolted to the fixing. yes the car will be stiffer but not much. The real benifit is if the unthinkable happens. Check with your insurers too as some are none to keen on cages.Lastly enjoy it' s an RS.
 
Noise? Hah!!!!!!!!!

Gear box oil -many have great faith and good feedback on Swepco. Look at Bent, sorry, Bert Gear' s website at Berlyn Services for details.

Just to pick up on Laurences point about bolt in cages. There are cages which just bolt to the belt mounting points. These are v. common in europe but are not legal in UK motorsport (for classes where a cage is mandatory) even the ones where a plate wraps over the sill. The big advantage is that they require no modification to the car. The ' normal' UK bolt in ones do indeed need a mounting plate welded to the shell. A company called Heigo make both sorts.
Safety is however the real point.
 
The other problem with the Bolt in (to exisiting points) is if you actually have any. I cannot confirm this but I believe some cars have the rear fixings ommited. This is certainly the case on the later 993RS. My car for example has the outside fittings but not the tunnel fittings. These cages are IMHO for show only and give very little crash protection.

I think your Freudian slip was probably nearer the truth in your 1st post. Not only do these cars lack sound proofing but the engine and gearbox mounts are also stiffer thus more noise from tyres, gearbox, diff etc. The GT3 is just the same and all sorts of expensive and worrying noises eminate from the back end. Luckily I' ve had my back end sorted.....so that just leaves the car to sort out![&:]

Roll cage -

If you go for a bolt in roll cage you are less likely to write off the shell in a crash, or so I am told. This is apparently because the G-Forces are transmitted more evenly around the car. I am hoping that none of us actually proves whether this is true or not.

Most certainly will be seeing me on the track at some point, but probably not in the short term. Not niave enough to think I can drive as spirited in the RS as this is a totally different beast to what I' m used to. Cut my teeth on an E30 M3 and I am taking that back to the Nurburgring in August as I can drive that there and back, would probably have to trailer the RS. In the meantime I will practice around Jurby, our local airfield circuit, but as Gary has pointed out already it' s a bit abrasive and stone chippy. Nothing to hit if you lift off mid-corner though!

Timmy if u can hack an M3 E30 at the ' ring u have my respect and won' t have any probs with the RS!!!!!!!

BTW, have u seen the last issue of Classic Car? Load on the M3 E30 there.

Ah at last. You may have Melons Mr. Moderator Spear and mine might be smaller but I' ve now got more than you (5).

TIMMY just done my first track day at Bedford Autodrome, very little to hit should you have a big off, loads of space and really good black top, ideal venue. Amazing how far you can spin on freshly mown damp grass!!!!!!!! Take the RS to the Ring I will be there later in the year.

Des is now on the list for lap times at Bedord. Apparently he is the first person to lap in over half an hour.

Still you can easily spin at 35mph on wet grass so be careful in future. If you see Des coming the other way don' t bother to wave...write him a note and give it to him as he goes by!!!!!!

Isnt there a Bedford Autodrome event the day before the National Event? If I can get over that would seem to be the weekend of choice.

Funds have been somewhat drained by the purchase and I need to buy a tow vehicle first, then a trailer before venturing to the Ring in the RS. Would try and do Spa as well as it' s always been shut when I' ve previously been. Thinking on I think there was a Porsche day on last year c 11/08. Dont think there were any UK cars but all I can say it' s a good job that the outside of Eau Rouge had been tarmac' d else there would have been a glut of cheap GT3s for sale.

why on earth are you trailering your car to the ring! Drive it there. I have and it' s a nice easy drive, already done it once this year in May with Autotrack. If you want to do the ring and Spa go with Autotrack UK for Spa on the 29th & 30th September. The ring is open 27th & 28th. We are going probably in a very large group so should be fun. See you there.[:)]
