Hi guys,

So I picked up my Turbo S at the weekend...now I have about 600 miles under my belt, wow what a car! but I need some reassurance on a couple of issues please;

Road noise - to be honest, wow it is loud, mostly from the 295s I know, but after 400 miles it was driving me mad...is this just a factor of the wheel width (and obviously road surface) or do you think I have sound insulation issues?

Front end handling - again, I'm new to rear engined super cars, but got out for a little jaunt myself tonight (no toddler or wife with me) and have to say under power the front did feel a little vague, I appreciate that the majority of the weight is over the rear, but not quite as planted as I expected, little unsettled over bumps, slightly bouncy! I also have a bit of creaking from suspension at slow speed manovering, is this related?

Thanks again for your advice

If you are anywhere near, or even if you aren't, I would recommend a trip to Center Gravity in Atherstone, Warks. Chris Franklin is the ride and handling guru, and will be able to tell you what's wrong.

If it's anything like either of my cars, the concrete roads on the a417 / a419 are terrible, they generate aweful road noise with wide tyres. Hit some smooth tarmac and away it goes.

thanks guys,

Unfortunately I am in Inverness, bit far for a trip to Warickshire! Does anyone one know any Scottish suspension gurus?

Nope. Try it on 315s!!! It is quite dependent on the road surface as well. Mine varies between loud and ouch.

I'm running 315s and I really don't find them particularly noisy. My 295 Toyos were deafening.

It's all relative. If you're used to driving a Jag then you will notice all the problems you've mentioned. If you're used to driving a 964RS you will think the turbo S is eerily quiet.

If under power it feels like the nose of the car lifts up a lot and it starts to wander, it may be that your rear shocks need refurbing/replacing as your car is 'nose up'. I had the same issue with my car, after the ride heights were adjusted (by Chris Franklin), it didn't feel like that anymore.

I've had my Turbo S for 18 months now - I hope you get to enjoy it as much as I have mine!
The road noise can be very loud, particularly on concrete motorway, but as soon as you are on tarmac it is really very quiet; I have 295's on mine. I find it is exactly the same with my winter tyres, and they are 265 section on the rear.
I find my car is very sensitive to any alignment irregularities - when I first got it the handling was quite unnerving at times, but once I'd had it set up properly on a good 4 wheel full geometry system it was transformed. It's then worth getting it checked out again every 6 months or so depending on how much/ how hard you use it - mine is my "everyday car" so is getting quite a bit of use and abuse.

thanks guys,

Looking at the irregular tyre wear from the health check sheet on last months service I think it will be worth getting the geometry checked, so I am heading to Edinburgh soon to get this done. Funnily enough, the noise doesn't bother me now, think it was just a long motorway based journey that highlighted the problem, I don't notice it now on my local roads. (maybe the snow is damping the noise!)

cheers

What brand of tyres are you running? When I first got mine it was on Pirelli's and they were loud!! On Michelin now and much better. Toyo 888's sound like Landrover tyres!!!

+1 for Chris Franklin at Centre Gravity, well worth travelling the distance, he fettled my car and the difference was night and day.

Also whats the verdict on running wider than standard 295s on a Turbo. Mine aren't due for a while but heard a few people now running 305s. Do they fit the standard hollow spoke turbo rims ok?
