My Turbot upgrades are nearly complete now - just some fine fettling and the mapping ready for Dyno day on 7th May

The new specification of the car is on the main page HERE

The story of the upgrades is near the bottom of the Updates & mods page HERE

The 944 Turbo section shows a lot of the parts used from page 29 onwards, with the work itself starting on page 41

Not all the details are there - a bit of mystery can sometimes be a good thing - particularly with some of the things we learned and fabricated along the way. What was originally going to be a 3 day job ended up as 3 weeks of work. Budgets stretched during the process.

I would like to offer thanks to those that were involved with the project;

Motor Preparation - Peter & Frank 0208-455-9698.
Pete is a true mechanical genius and about the only other person I trust with my cars. His knowledge of the 944 has been fine tuned over the 4 years he has looked after my 2 944's and I would recommend him to anyone looking for servicing and modification work and who is willing to travel to London. My thanks to Frank for allowing us to monopolise a ramp for 3 weeks ! Motorpreparation labour rate is £45 per hour.

Streamline Accident Repair - Michael Michael 0208-458-1259.
Pulled out all the stops to get the badge panel and bonnet finished while they were spraying the 944S at the same time. Streamline have carried out bodywork and resprays on several of my cars, and on recommendation, other 944 members of this board.

Dave Lindsey at Lindsey Racing.
Dave has the ability go get parts from Oklahoma to the UK so quickly it's frightening. Although we have had some problems fitting some of his products (and are now virtually a UK quality control point !), Dave & Mike's support has enabled us to complete the project. I would not hesitate to recommend Lindsey Racing products - and the Dollar rate is just too good to miss at the moment !

Charlie at CTM Heads - 0208-592-1180.
Charlie has built engine components for me for over 10 years. From big valve Cologne V6 heads to full group A spec RS500 conversions. CTM have a fully equipped workshop to bore, hone, balance and machine just about any component required to reach your goals. They also have an excellent reputation for building serious competition engines and carried out specialist work for the leading names in motorsport. (next project could be a 3+ litre bottom end)

Jon Mitchell - 9xx - 01202-462951.
What can I say about Jon - he was there at times of despair with cheerful answers and an in-depth knowledge of his craft. A true gentleman.

Essential Styling - Simon Davidson 01442-258536.
Simon supplied parts for both the Turbot conversion and the 944S conversion that we are just about to start. Simon supplies good quality aftermarket parts that fit first time and do exactly what it says on the tin !

John Sims.
I don't know why really. [:D] Another true craftsman when a bit of fabrication is needed. If you need any wooden engine parts, he's you man [:D][:D]. John spurred me on through the project and was a good sounding board. He's also a good way of disposing of the tuning parts that used to be on Turbot. [:D][:D]

Finally - Allan at Weltmeister is going to provide the load dyno facilities so I can map it !

The car's not finished yet (are they ever ?) and I'm awaiting a Wolf-3D stand-alone engine management system from Lindsey Racing so I can extract the true potential from the engine. So far 500 miles and no leaks or breakages [:)][:)]

If it ain't broke - fix it 'till it is !!

Rick

I think the Widefire head gasket is highly over rated and you can't beat a bit of CNC'd 6mm birch ply.

My small involvement was huge fun and it is great watching a man have problems with his car to encourage you to pull you own car to pieces. [:)]. I am most honoured that WUF gets used as a test bed for forthcomming Beaky tuning adventures. It is also very encouraging that I can contact someone who has actually done the job when I consider changing bits on mine.

No job too large - or too small [:D][:D]

We all got a lot out of the experience.

P.S. when are you going to finish my mahogany louvres for the badge panel ? They'll certainly look better than the trellis you created for the mock-up [:D][:D][:D]

Oh, and thanks for creosoteing the underneeth of the car - so much classier than underseal [:D][:D]

Motor Preparation - Peter & Frank 0208-455-9698.
Pete is a true mechanical genius

I agree totaly. It was an honour to work along side Pete (though my involvement could only loosely be considered work).

Pete's care and attention to detail is such that, when things aren't just a case of unbolting one thing and sticking on something else, I would be happier with Pete doing the job than doing it myself. At sundry points when things that should have fitted didn't, Pete carried on with with the same cheerfull air ......and only said "Kerrrchiiiing!" a few times.[:D]

If I learned anything in my short time spannering on WUF it is:-

No matter how reliable the source, when things are anything but standard, seldom will they fit straight away. Furthermore, despite assuming a component has been tried previously (even by the vendor), you could well find out that you are the first.

Up grading is a long way away from just bolting on better bits. Without people like Pete, and those mentioned above, to call on it is best left well alone. (I exclude myself from the above list as being worth speaking to in matters of car modification - but if you've got a problem with wood..... [;)] I do do a faily mean oil catch tank bracket though.)

I congratulate Rick on a spectacular piece of work and hope that it gives him a great deal of enjoyment. There are those that will scoff, 'cos it's not how Porsche built it, but their comments are worth little, and it ain't their car... I wouldn't like to even guess how much that lot has cost but I suspect the old saying "Speed costs money, how fast would you like to go?" has never been truer.

Did look/sound good[;)], nice pics too.
Some handy contacts (and John[&:]) especially for a service.

Looking V.Good well done! Look forward to playingspot the secrets! [:D]

Just one thing though have you considered a next / previous button on your photo pages? (next to home and up) Having to go back to the index page (and remember which one you just looked at) can affect the enjoyment!

See you Saturday.

Tony

PS a parcel from Canada arrived for me this morning [:)]

It's all coming together Rick [:D]

I'm looking forward to seeing the results on the Dyno on Saturday and if you are doing the mapping this week I shall listen out in my back garden - I'm only about 8 miles away, so I better take my fragile Wedgewood off the mantlepiece!

Oh and here is how I (well my Brother) sorted the turbo cooling connection on my bigger turbo.

The longer bolt and spacer allow enough clearance,

Tony

Rick your car is soooo close to the spec I have been building from my Lindsey Racing wish list (which I do, for once, have the money to back up).

We need to have a long chat on Saturday if you don't mind, about the spec of your car as well as the PMSC [;)]

Car looks fab once its set up it will be a rocket no doubt. Rick, just one thing, please use the correct units when displaying torque, its lbft NOT/ NEVER WILL BE lb/ft . I know you see lb/ft in some book/mags even well respected tuning book but its sooooooo wrong and is totally meaningless.

He endith the Civil Engineering Public Service announcement.

[:D]

That's nearly as annoying to you as people talking about breaking or breaks is to me (when they mean slowing down as opposed to having a short rest).

Oh and here is how I (well my Brother) sorted the turbo cooling connection on my bigger turbo.

It is just such "Ah..I wonder how we are going to get around this?" solutions that should be noted by respected tuning parts suppliers with proprietary solutions provided.

But then if it was easy any body could do it.

Re: Breaks/brakes lbft lb/ft
Chill out boys, it's a forum. If we where hear too correct every wons bad spelling and grandma their wood bee know thyme two right about any thing off interest.....and it mite cause a fence. We no watt they mean.

I use Motor Preparation (Frank) on my S2 for body work and they are the best i've seen. (Recomended by Rick). They are soon to do my rusting seals.

We're also here to learn!! Call me old fashioned but I rather prefer learning the correct things. Did you know my car does 165 hours per mile. And it accelerates at 15 seconds per meter. Yes meaningless drivel I quite agree!!! I'm off for a break now...[:D] Don't worry Fen it revolves round a KitKat not a Brembo

I'm with you 100%, but there are ways of bringing such things to peoples attention with subtlety. The more we know, the more we know there is to know. And nobody likes a know it all. [;)]

I like that good quote, but subtlety is not my bag, never has been never will. Its part of my irresistible charm [:D]

I quite like knowing about as much as possible without ever knowing enough to make a difference[8D]

I have two way to describe:-

"Knows alot, but never enough"

"Knows stuff about everything, but not enough to be good at any of it"

I quite like being the second one[:D]

My speciality is putting down tools, and forgetting where I put them, thus a 1 hour job turns into an all day affair!
