New Porsche 3.6 Engine - What would normally be fitted?

My 2002 Targa had a new engine fitted by Porsche Swindon in 2011 and has done about 20k miles since.

The receipt shows the engine plus a number of widgets and fittings but doesn't show any ancillaries or highlights any upgraded parts eg: IMS. Total bill was £13.5k

Has anyone else had a new engine from Porsche (or hasn't but knows the situation) and knows what is normally done by them eg: new vs recon, new parts fitted as standard, etc.

Hi - believe it or not but 13.5k is fairly low for a main dealer swap. I imagine they acquired an exchange unit (If you suffered IMS failure then not much of the engine can economically be salvaged) All the ancillaries would have been swapped over. Normally clutch is replaced and a new water pump. We often fit a new AOS, low T stat and oil pressure sender.

The service notes say it was a cracked cylinder

Would it of had a new IMS and RMS when fitted so you think?
 
At that time, the full exchange engines (not short engines) were often fairly heavily subsidised, so £13.5k sounds about right. I have seen a few "exchange" engines from that period, and the ones I saw looked like brand new units to me. They had all the ancillaries fitted, and were even pre-filled with Mobil 1. When I say new, I mean new. The castings looked virgin, without any evidence of staining or cleaning.

The exchange units were built to the latest specification at that time, so will have the latest version of the intermediate shaft and drive. In 2011, that would have been the same as used in the last revision of the M96 engine as fitted to MY2005 996's.
 
I had a replacement engine in 2008 on my 2005 997. I was told they are not new but hand rebuilt units at the factory with any current improvements incorporated such as later IMS bearing. Original ancillarys were used and I had to pay only for the oil. It didn't come with a fresh warranty.
 
Thanks all, when I called Swindon last May when I bought the car to check provenance, the very helpful service lady told me it had a 2 year warranty when the engine was fitted and was very apologetic that it wasn't still in place. I bought the car from the original lady owner that had full Swindon OPC history, Swindon new her well and confirmed that everything had been done when needed. The one bit of advice from Swindon was to use the Targa roof more often so it doesn't play up! They were more than happy to take the car back on their service books, not surprised as they took 2k every time went in! Can't knock them as they were very helpful as were the bodywork guys.

It sounds like it's positive from the replies I've had today but I'm going to give Swindon service a call again and see if I can get some more detail on what they actually did on the engine at the time and the work and process at that time

Phoned Porsche Swindon helpful, but the only info they gave me was that the engines that come into them are complete engines, and that the only things they swap over are things like the starter motor and the air con units, etc.

The part number for the engine is P996.100.995.BX
Engine number is 66569044

Can anyone tell anything about the engine type/build based on the details above?
 
The engine number is broken down like this:

6 = 6 cylinder
6= Engine Version
5 = Model Year 2005
69044 = Serial Number

I think the Engine Version 6 is for M96. My Carrera is a type 3, and has a 930.20 engine. My Gen1 Cayman was type 7, and had an M97.21 engine.

Exchange engines are normally stamped with AT on the serial number, on the sump casting. You would have to grovel underneath to see it though. (AT=Austausch - German for Exchange). As for the part number, all the parts catalogue shows is "Replacement Engine".

but the engine number hasn't changed on subsequent invoices (and not even shown on recent invoices) the engine number shown on the old invoices is 66312343.

How do I find out the new number?

I have an official letter from the Swindon Porsche service centre confirming the engine swap with with new engine number and mileage, etc

Has the V5C been changed to show the new number? The engine number is stamped on the crankcase. Usually difficult to read after a while with all the road dirt, etc.
 
Thanks Richard - I contacted OPC Exeter who did the original exchange - they told me that the engine comes in blank with no number and they transfer the original number across - so no need to change any of the documentation.

This doesn't help as far as identifying which version of the engine was installed - but assume that the engine installed was a 2011 version of the 996 part.

Sorry, but that is nonsense. The exchange engines are all stamped with a new number, ending in AT. eg M96/01 66W 07551 AT
