New Purchase

Have just become the proud owner of a 1990 C4 Coupe in marine blue. 'Upgraded' from a 3.2 Carrera.

Bought from Roly Baldwin at Eporsch who is, IMHO, a nice guy.

First impresssions are good. The car feels much faster than my 3.2 did, more responsive, more planted. Definitely more entertaining, and that's what I was after. Have also had a soft spot for the 964 shape since university days when a beautiful midnight blue coupe used to park up near the college.

The previous owner had a top end re-build done last year at JZM, and has also had front brakes and wishbones replaced. Mechanically the car feels very sharp.

Only downside (so far, touch wood touch wood etc.) is that it's had a front end respray done (as many have) by a less than pro paintshop, and it's a bit orange peely. Only noticable close up but I can sense creeping irritation beginning...

Also has a crooked grin, and perished side skirt rubbers - first DIY jobs with help from porsche964.co.uk technical tips.

Will be a Keevil, Wilts for track day next Monday (14th March) for a proper test!

Cheers for now

Martin

Welcome to the 964 world, you know it makes sense.

Mine also had a top end rebuild from JZM and all shocks, wishbones, struts and springs replaced by the last owner £8500 receipt for the history folder!!

This was my first Porsche and to tell you the truth I couldn't have spent the money in any better way.

Enjoy it!

Thinking of getting a C4 myself. Now that I've driven one, I am seriously considering flogging my 3.2

But re your comments: "The car feels much faster than my 3.2 did, more responsive, more planted."

I found that the 964 wasn't that much faster nor responsive. Maybe it needed a tune up, tho'. The 3.2 feels so much rawer. That raggy old 964 felt like a limo after my 3.2!

Thanks Rob.

Zia - what you say is interesting. I've gone from a 3.2 which was in really good nic but a few people said wasn't as responsive as some they'd driven, to a C4 which I've been told feels very responsive as C4s go, so perhaps that's the difference. The 3.2 hadn't had any major engine work done, but the C4's top end re-build may have made a difference.

I still reckon the C4 is much more sure-footed, and there's no doubt it's better in UK road traffic conditions.

News from the track day - car performed beautifully. Still think it's faster than the 3.2. Also feels more stable at speed, and you feel as if the limit would arrive a bit more gently than in the 3.2, but I'm not a good enough driver to be a real judge of this. There is a trade off for the stability of 4wd though - you don't half notice the understeer in tight corners.

If you're still thinking of changing I would say go for it - the 964 has more than enough to stop you missing a 3.2. However, if you can, find some more wedge so you can get a good 964 because, like any car, a rough one will just be a pain in the backside and stop you enjoying it.

Cheers

As the new owner of Martin's absolutely gorgeous 3.2 (not the Targa in the picture - still got photos to take) I have to tell you that I reckon he's made a huge mistake.

I don't know......you 964 boys with your power steering and your ABS and your flippy up spoilers!

[FONT=Arial"]How could he Mel. He has to do whatever he can to reduce the HUGE weight problem a C4 has over the MIGHTY 3.2

Coincidentally, I'm just reading a Spring '91 P&911W that a pal sent (thanx Johnny!!) -it has an article on a '90 Cup Car. There is an interview with Dr. Jonathan Palmer, who before he bought his 928 GTS had an oppurtunity to drive the range.

These are his jottings on the 964:

"The way the 911 not only goes on and on but gets better and better never ceases to amaze me. I am sorry to disappoint all you pre-Carrera2/4 owners, but these latest variants have transformed the car in my book. Why? Well, the first thing you notice is that the steering is now beautifully weighted, which basically means a lot lighter and with less kick-back than with the older, pre-power steering set-up. And don't let anyone tell you that the addition of power removes feel; the steering on the Carrera 2 and 4 is a real delight. The magical flat-six music is still there, and it's even easier to play tunes with now that the gearbox shift quality is lighter and more positive than ever. Not only is the engine very powerful, but it also has that unburstable feel -I am quite sure the rev limiter could be set at 8,000, rather than just under 7! The final cream on the cake is that the revised suspension layout enables all of the power to be used virtually all of the time in the dry -and all the time in the Carrera 4!"

Go on Zia, you know you want to!!

Rgds
