hi all,
I am a brand new member of the forum, and would like to say "hi".
in the next couple of months I will be buying a 2008/9 Cayman, either auto or manual, price about £19-23k, and would greatly appreciate any tips. I have had a test drive in a 2011 PDK Cayman, which I found extremely to my liking, however, "she who,must....", says its too much money and to go for something a bit cheaper.
does anyone think that existing prices will fall due to the new cayman coming out in March?
any feedback greatly appreciated.

They usually do and as the gen 2 PDK is such a big improvement over gen 1 tip Or man so i would wait .you should be able to pick one up in the summer for late 20's I guess
 
Steve, Whilst it's inevitable that prices will fall, don't forget that the Cayman's been out of production for more than 12 months, so there's going to be a shortage of well-optioned cars around. I would guess that in your price range you're only likely to get a base Cayman or an early Cayman S and I'd certainly recommend you getting a Gen 2 car (from Feb 2009) if you want to avoid worries about RMS/IMS issues. If I were you, I'd start your search now before the best cars get snapped up...! Jeff
 
How long have you got Steve..? Just try Googling Porsche RMS/IMS (crankshaft rear main seal and intermediate shaft bearing failures) as well as scuffed and cracked cylinders and you'll find out.....and probably scare yourself too! Fortunately, the later Gen 1 cars were more robust in this respect and you're unlikely to experience any problems (which probably are overplayed anyway). The engine core was redesigned for the Gen 2 cars which don't have an IMS. The Gen 2 Cayman S benefits form having direct fuel injection (DFI) but the base Cayman sticks with an indirect injection setup. Always best to get your potential purchase checked by a reputable Indy before purchase. Hope that helps. Jeff
 
one thing I was going to ask, when you see a car advertised for , say, £24999, at main dealer or garage, what sort of discount should I be looking for, down to £24000, or a percentage. I realise it does depend on the car, but when I've bought in the past, not Porsches though, I have always haggled. is this done with porsche dealers? thanks for the responses sws

Hi For both of my Cayman's (Gen I & Gen II R) I have haggled for both. If the dealer wants the sale haggle, but thy will play it cool. Alun

Hi For both of my Cayman's (Gen I & Gen II R) I have haggled for both. If the dealer wants the sale haggle, but thy will play it cool. Alun Caymanwirral

I think that he's been around for some time and advertises in the Club magazine under Williams Crawford, but I think that the tie-up with Williams is quite recent. Beyond that, I can't really help I'm afraid. For more local advice, it might be useful to contact the Club's South West Region (R15) RO Simon Ryder (r15@porscheclubgb.com) or PM/email tscaptain who posts regularly on the forum. Jeff
 
Just moved this to the appropriate forum section, I was on holiday lat week and only just got back to the forum. Welcome to the forum and hopefully before long to Cayman ownership. All that Jeff has told you is correct but the IMS/RMS "problems" are largely panic mongering in my view, obviously the fact that the IMS is not there does remove a possible although rare potential future problem, not that any change such as the designing out of the IMS is a bad thing but I think one of the great things of the Gen2 is the DFI engine which drops emissions ( including Road Tax ) and fuel consumption while also giving an increase of around 20bhp. Of course the DFI only applies to the 3.4 and not the 2.9 Caymans.
