New Purchase

New member
Hi,

New to the forum and new to Porsche' s........so here goes.

Just purchased a 1981 SC which is left hand drive.

This question is bound to have been asked before, but is it possible to convert the car to RHD if I can find a good dashboard from a breakers?

If so, is it worth it, or should I just leave as is?

Cheers

Vlad

Looks like a slight colour mismatch between the wing and trunk lid in a couple of those photos. Not sure if thats enough to put you off though.

If the mechanicals check out then budget for the worst with the paint. If you can see rust it is definitely lurking in other places too. The B-pillars could potentially cost a grand or more per side, so add it up from there, maybe 1-1.5k for the rest, hard to say without checking the rust traps.

Update:

Bit furry! Rust bubbles at the base of both b pillars, joints at top edge of both wings where they meet the scuttle panel have been re-made in filler with a bead of black silicone, filler in front leading corner of o/s wing under headlight, some bubbling around headlights, corrosion around badge fixings on engine cover, no history prior to 2000.

Otherwise good in many ways - refurb'd Fuchs, very nice interior with new headlining, recon gearbox, new clutch, gear linkage and pedal box bushes, runs and drives very well.

So a bit of a mixed bag, but not worth £8k IMHO.

Make a low offer and see what happens... doesn't sound like you hated it. They might really need to sell it.

Depends if you think you could live with it, or are prepared to take on the work...

Hi ,
Been following this thread.
I agree, make an offer, as Mike says.
But if you want to restore the B pillars and front wings and you can't do the work yourself then I think you will be spending a few thousand more, could be £3K to £4K on top of your purchase price for the repair work.
Therefore if you have the £3K to £4K already then put the money to a better car up front beacuse this more expensive car will be worth it in the long run, don't forget you may want to sell it on in the future.

Then again John ,a decent enough low offer on a car thats mechanically sound isn't a bad thing , 3 to 4k on bodywork then gets a spot on mechanically sound car that might be in better condition than the 12k car he goes to look at .

Also alot depends on the spec of the car ........

Mine for example is an SC sport , with a few extras's like cruise control fitted and mechnically apart from the exhaust is in very good condition ,so 3 to4k invested in the bodywork is worth doing .

Again horses for courses and buying on condition is everything.

Harv,
Good point, I agree with you.
It's just that I could not buy a car knowing that the rust was there especially in the pillars and not do anything about it, because unarrested the rust will kill the value of the car. So I guess the new buyer is at some point going to have to sort it out, sooner rather than later I would suggest.
Cheers
John

totally agree , its going to need sorting ..... and i belive i'd rather see it stripped back and have the rot removed properly and then plated up and then sprayed ,rather than having a car that looks ok now ,only to bubble to hell after the winter ,having paid a premium .
Thats the huge risk with cars of this age .
Who did the work ,where and when ?? as there isn't gonna be many rust free original cars about .

However documenting the work being done is a must and in as much detail as you can , ours will get daily photos done to make sure all aspects are recorded for the next owner.
All adds greatly to cars of this age .

Harv,
All good points and I totally agree.
I think our new perchaser Martin has plenty to think about and these threads have given him an impartial view and hopefully good advise. It helps him to make up his mind.
I can put myself in his position when I bought my car, I was just thinking about owning the car I always wanted and glossed over the other important things.
Cheers
John

Am on the point of byuing an SC after an absence of 2-3 years
Ah the lure of the 3 litre, irresistible for those who love to drive. I knew you'd miss that SC one day. Your Carrera is in the best hands possible these days thankfully, one of the best homes I know in fact (no not mine).

Great news on the impending purchase, catch up with you soon maybe. Let me know if there's anything you want me to look at up this way on your behalf [;)]
