New purchase!

I have just this weekend purchased a lovely Silver 1983 SC Coupe, 57k miles from new and all the history. Having driven the car home with a friend, where it drove beautifully, there are a couple of things that have cropped up. I am sure both have arisen at some time with some of you.

1. Is it ok to run the car on unleaded or should I add the lead replacement additive?
2. The blower/fan does not seem to operate, the light comes on when the levers are moved over, but no air blows out. Checked the fuses, all ok...any tips?

Apart from that the car is wonderful. My friend and I have looked for ages for a nice 911. We looked at the more modern 964s and indeed Carerras, but I think we have made a great choice.

924 Le mans & now a 911 SC!

Sounds like a top car.

It needs 98RON otherwise it would need the iginition timing changing. It doesn't need LRP and is OK on unleaded. I use Shell Optimax.

There are at least two blowers - a hot air blower in the engine compartment and a fresh air blower in the luggage compartment under the windscreen. Both have systems have control cables as well as an electrical circuit. The fresh air blower normally only supplies the dash vent/ side dash vents and footwell. The centre console vents are for aircon. If you car has aircon there may be a separate third blower behind the centre console purely for aircon.

Guess it needs narrowing down. It sounds like thed cold air blower may simply have died. But do you have hot air to the cabin? It is not unusual for (both) blowers to pack up around now - both did on my car - funnily enough not that long after I bought it. Followed I should add about 18 mths later by the air con blower.

The heater control cables link to a couple of boxes with flaps that regulate the amount of hot air taken via the heat exchanger to the cabin. These flapper boxes can become stuck in position too.

In fact the ventilation/ heating/ aircon system is fairly involved. The Bentley Manual explains it far better than I can. It is indispensable for everything ISBN 0-8376-0290-4, best prices probably on Amazon.

A new fresh air blower is not a big problem/ cost and it is a DIY job, a new hot air blower is a bit more expensive. Flapper boxes are hard to get at and at a couple of hundred each not cheap - a job too plan for when the engine is out eg for a clutch. The heater control box is v expensive to replace and when it fails badly cars usually end up converted to a simple lever system.

Aircon is a pain in the arse and I'll probably take mine off over the winter. Can't find a specialist to re-charge it and it weighs a fair bit.

Phill, Jerry,

Many thanks for this advice. I will put super unleaded in from now on. As for the fan....there was a lot of hot air this morning! My car does not have aircon, so i will just open the sunroof if it gets hot. I have to say she is very fast, put my foot down today to overtake a lorry...blimey! Not sure about steering, its straight and no wobbles but has 205/55 tyres on Fuchs at front, and makes steering feel heavy...or is it just me?

Mark

205/55 (VR16) would be correct for a 6 x 16" rim.

Steering feeling heavy is fine, provided the tyre pressures are correct (front and rear). With steering you obviously want it to drive where you point it especially at higher speeds where camber etc makes a less marked difference. It shouldn't wander around. There shouldn't be any play in the wheel either. The Turbo track rod conversion is v popular and your car may have had it done already (steering more positive).

Good to hear you're enjoying the drive. A 204bhp SC in good nick is a really fast car, especially point to point. It is also v well balanced, predictable and rewarding to drive. Course the 964 onwards are a fair bit quicker but that is fine by me.

BTW it should stop v rapidly too. If the pads (and to some extent) discs are thin it really does affect the braking. Juts had some brake bits changed on mine for (all standard parts) and it now stops even better than b4 - better than most modern cars.

Hi Mark,
Good luck with your new 911SC you will certainly enjoy it, just be careful when taking bends at high speed. You will soon feel you have an engine in the back, so a tip for you is slow in and power out not the other way around.

I have just read the forum messages regarding your questions.
I use 98 ron unleaded in my car, Porsche designed their engines mainly with the US market in mind (i.e unleaded). 98ron is stated in my hand book and on the inside of the petrol flap so don't worry use 98ron unleaded.

It sounds like your fresh air blower motor could be kippered, to test this turn on the ignition only and move the control lever through the three positions, you should here the three distinct speed noises. If you need a new blower motor you could as I did buy a new motor and fan housing complete from Specialist Care of Malton or just a blower motor and fit it to your existing housing. I paid around £130 for a new fan and housing , a blower motor only will cost about £60.
The steering on my car with the same tyres as you have is a little heavy when moving the car out of the garage and manovering but once moving it becomes light. When driving fast it is very light!

Goog luck
John

John,

Thanks for the reply. I will take on board your comments regarding handling! I will have a go with the fan this weekend.

many thanks again

Mark

go to a local brakers yard with blower motor(just the motor it's removable) in hand and get one for a fiver. That's what i did with mine many moons ago.
