New radiator, where from?

I seem to have a hole in the rad on my S2, I'm going to change it next week but am looking for recommendations.

There's one for £187 inc VAT on Porscheshop's website. This seems the cheapest so far but has anyone got any other ideas? Maybe an alloy one from somewhere? I've not tried OPC yet.

Also, Clarks garage says to remove the rad from the bottom on non-turbo models. Is this really crucial? I'm not sure I can get the car high enough for that.

I really don't need this just after I paid for a service and tax []

I bought mine from Berlyn. It arrived in a couple of days. Can not remember how much it was though. As for removing the car went up high enough on a trolley jack.
Easy job if every thing comes undone OK.

+1 for Bert Gear. Im confident that he will either better the price or the quality of other suppliers. You should always get a price from an OPC too.

I made a mistake with the Porscheshop price above, for the S2 it's £275! Berlyn lists it at £330. Not sure of the brandname on either, or even what the OEM is. Either way it's a lot of cash for a rad.

At the moment Euro Car Parts are the winners, £254 with free next working day delivery, that's an NRF rad.

I'll ring OPC tomorrow and also Andrew Page etc to see if they list it.

I had thought about a 2nd hand item but if I intend keeping the car for a while yet so I think I'll splash out and change it for a shiny new one. Nice to know it's sorted properly (at least that's what I tell myself as I hand over the cash!).

Thanks for the fitting advice, jacking I can do so I'll get it out the bottom.

Well said. How long had the original rad lasted?

I can't get my head around doing all the labour to fit a used part which could fail next week, against a part which isn't much different in price to a flippin' Fiesta but lasts 20 years! [&o]

I have 2 nice shiny 951 rads here, both in perfect undamaged condition. £50 plus post if anyone is interested. You can get the rad out of the top if you unbolt the fan housing first and pull it clear. Can get them pressure tested if you want as well as I have a recore company 5 minutes from my house I have used for years in Falkirk. All finning seems to be intact on both from what I remember. I would rather pay £50 for a good used rad rather than £300 for a new one, especially this time of the year!

I've been searching too.

Bert Gear and Design 911 are near the price of what Porsche charge (which is £345 all in).

A specialist near me told me that the N.R.F radiator that ECP sell for £254 is exactly the same item as what Porsche sell but at a £100 discount.

I've been tempted to get mine recored (it's fine until the summer comes (it's a little blocked over the years of use it's had) but I cannot afford to have my car off the road (at least the matrix on mine is fine (but the connecting olives (cheap, but still a little awkward to get at) are not too hot).

Sulzer, how much would you want for a recored rad?

I know in the French circles Nissens radiators are a respected brand and often help the cars run a little cooler.

Going to be watching this with interest....

I took my S2 over to Unit 11 to see about getting the oil leak from the oil cooler housing fixed and unfortunately he noticed that the Radiator was leaking too, the whiff of coolant when the fan kicked in gave it away.

I'm away at the moment until the New Year but its going to be going in in January so any means to reduce the cost will be good for me.

If I remember correctly John @ Unit 11 got the best price from Euro Car Parts. It only seems to be a pin hole in the core, but when added up the radiator, oil leak and a check of the belt tension will cost £££'s. Not good after a holiday in America and Christmas on top....!!!![]

I'd double check your facts TBH. S2s and Turbos came with a seperate aircooled oil cooler which lives in the RHS of the front bumper, hence your car should not be mixing oil and water together unless there is something else amiss.

Chas,

I think I confused things here...... Its not mixing oil and water, the oil leak is from the oil cooler housing totally separate from the radiator, we reckon the gasket has gone between the housing and the block.

The water leak is definately from the radiator, right in the center about the 4th row up, I guess its been hit by a stone as it looks a bit exposed here.

I think that's the problem, to be honest. A friend bought a very good Ford Fiesta for £350 once, and did a lot of troublefree miles in it. Bit wheezy and underpowered, but not bad at all. [:)]

Oli.

Alasdair, I'm after a replacement for my turbo as my current rad seems to be partially blocked. Is either of them still available?

I've ordered one from ECP now, £254 delivered next day.

OPC wanted £350.

I spoke to a guy about recoring it but he said that the tanks tend to go brittle with age and he wasn't prepared to commit to doing it. He could get me a brand new one for the same as ECP but it would have been a week to get here.

I rang up my local recorer today and he said near enough the exact thing, and said by the time I'd got it recored and looked at getting new tanks I may as well go for a new rad.

To be fair, he could be right. On an old BMW E32 730i a mate had the tanks on that were cracking badly.

I think new is the way to go if you need to rely on the car. I hope to get another 20 years out of it [:D]

New rad now fitted, car cools much better (takes a lot longer for the fans to kick in when stopped) and no more leaks.

The rad from ECP had Porsche stamped in it and a sticker with the porsche part number on it so I'm guessing it's the same part you would get from OPC.

It seems my specialist was right.

After reading this I'm more tempted to get the rad once the weather starts to warm up (my car is running a bit warm since the stat was fitted (and contrary to what I thought it does open.
