New RS Buyers Guide

Following the rather splendid idea from Rich, it seems we now have a project on our hands!

For those who haven't read the appropriate thread, there is a view that as the Porsche press are doing such a poor job of writing an accurate RS buyers guide, we (PCGB 964RS Register) should put together our own one. The concept is to have a booklet that is the reference for all things RS and in particular, what to look for when buying. Some years ago, Laurence wrote an excellent document but in the light of added interest in the model and so much BS out there, I see the need for an even more comprehensive guide, with photos. Hopefully, a couple of the reputable RS specialists will help towards costs in return for advertising and credits, where due.

So, the first question to be answered is whether others think this is a good idea. I see this as one of thye major "15 Years" projects and is a fitting way for the Register to mark the occasion. If people agree, we then need a few volunteers.

Ollie has already votunteered to put it together.

other posts are.........

Advertising sales manager! - there really are only a couple of trade people who we should be talking to (and they post on here!) so it shouldn't be too onerous. There is a need to work with Ollie to understand how much it will cost.

Editorial team - I suggest breaking this down into a few sections, so as not to put too much on any one person. From this group, somebody will be chosen/volunteer to act as editor.

Photography - It would be really great to get some good pictures to illustrate this with.

Cars - to photograph.

Location for photos - We might need to get the use of a proper ramp, to get good technical pics underneath.

Any other ideas?

I will kick the ball off by volunteering to write some of it and in particular, my specialist subject RHD! Please post your views so we can make this ahppen quickly!

Melv - is what you're referring to going to be an RS-inside-out, no holds barred, no stone left unturned, fact-based, no guesswork, no fuzzy lines definitive guide to our cars? If it is, then the job is already done - as long as it is in a format which is easily available to enthusiasts/interested parties/potential buyers for the next few years.

When can we see it? Gimme, gimme... [:D]

It is a book celebrating Fifteen Years of the 964RS -should be out by the Silverstone Classic and will be available to all......

ORIGINAL: MoC2S

And I presume Des is writing the chapter on 'Inflating Values' ... [;)]

cheers, Maurice [:D]

As someone who's just started the hunt for an RS (looking at the first one tomorrow) a detailed buying guide would be very useful. A few examples of the kind of things I'd like to know:

The oft mentioned seam-welding: which seams? i.e. where do I look to determine it's a geniune RS body shell?

What colours were generally available on each model (e.g. are there (m)any LHD Signal Green RSLs - if you're selling one, please let me know, can't afford the CS on mobile.de) ?.

As a 964 owner (I suspect most RS buyers have already had a 964 of some type) what are all the differences between a C2 and RS?

What was standard and optional on each model (touring, lightweight, clubsport, others)?

Which colours are clear coated?

And so on. Really, it's a bit more detail that I want.

Cheers
Ian

Ah, now those are quite difficult questions. The seams are fairly visable on the rear suspension turrets for starters, the others escape my memory but can be found in the workshop manual section "scope of change C2 to RS" basically a PDF file detailing the welding required, although it's my belief that not all RS have exactly the same welding as in the manual(more contraversy!!). Other weld differences can be found in the rear section and front luggage area i think if memory serves me correctly. The colours are as in the Porsche workshop Teknik for the 964RS (don't have the book number to hand ) That book has most of the detail you need. As for clear coats, that probably applies to most metallics, dson't know about others. For the differences c2 to RS look at my buyers guide, it basically gives you these without too much detail. For more detail agian consult the Porsche workshop Teknic book.

Simon, Melv,
Just a suggestion for this idea you both have, - would it be possible to find some of the people responsible for the 964rs in Stuttgart? Would they be allowed to talk freely about the development, the ideas behind the car, the success of the race series, the state of the company at the time? Walter R was involved with development I think??
There is the language barrier and the difficulty with finding the people, but it would be very interesting and very important detail as the cars get older and more important.
The cars come from an age that is so different from the sophisticated marketing machine which Porsche are today, so the story would be free of the sanitised claptrap & spin we endure from them at present.
Just a thought
Keep up the good work
George
