This weeks Autocar June 1-7th makes interesting reading and the punchlines are as follows:-

SLK350 £34270 0-60 5.6secs 0-100 13.6 secs 30-50 in 4th/6 gears 4.6 secs 1465kg

Z4 3.0 £30855 0-60 5.8 secs 0-100 15.00 secs 30-50 in 4th/6 gears 5.0 secs 1290kg

Boxster 2.7 £31630 0-60 6.3 secs 0-100 15.2 secs 30-50 in 4th/5 gears 6.4 secs 1275kg

Main Summary:-

SLK 4.5/5 stars Leagues ahead of its predecessor. The SLK blends refinement and agility with immense desirability Porsche is the best to drive but SLK is the best car it wins []

Z4 4/5 stars An accomplished car by any standards, but in such talented company the Z4 feels outclassed.

Boxster 4/5 stars Though the Boxster is just starting to show its age, it is still the benchmark sports roadster [;)]

You already know the sports car of the bunch is the Boxster [8D] Its mid engined layout is bespoke and not built over the platform of a high volume saloon like the Z4 & SLK. If you crave directness and feel of steering, supreme body control, responsive handling and an engine that yearns to rev, look no further [:D] YET the new SLK achieves 90% of the Boxster's driving ability - for some, that last 10% is critical of course and adds a far broader spread of appeal. Seems a Boxster "S" would have made for a more valid comparison.

SO WHY DIDN'T THEY GO THAT ROUTE BEFORE SETTING OFF ON THIS TEST []

The Boxster S is also more expensive so not really a valid comparison IMO.

Peter Robinson writing the article concluded that as the SLK350 came to a mouth watering £41505 with over 7K's worth of extra goodies, they maybe should have opted for the £38383 Boxster "S" which obviously would have been a fairer test as far as bhp, number of gogs in the box and bigger brakes etc go .... IMO that would have easily closed down the substantial performance differences this test through up.
