New starter motor question

Hi all, having a problem getting my engine to fire. It does it sometimes but then others just won't start.
I think it's the starter motor but I have a few issues when trying to get one.
When I look at the cheaper end of the scale £60 to £100 its for S2 and turbo (mine is a 86 lux) then when trying to find if these will fit my car it's hard to get a definite.
Then looking at the ones that will 100% fit £130 to £180 they seem to be quite a bit more money but then should I go all out and get a high torque model £230 but not sure I'm wasting money on such a high end starter for a daily driver when the money would be better spent elsewhere.
Don't want to get a used one, I don't mind refurbished but if an S2 starter works on a 2.5 lux then that would be perfect.
Any suggestions guys ???

hi there,… what i can tell u , is when my turbo starter played up,… i took the larger started off my 86 lux and fitted on just fine, onto my 87 turbo,….and is still in there now infact many years later …

i don’t see why the S2 flywheel teeth or bellhousing is any different but the lux should be fine, as mine was was

sure someone else may know more about the s2 s

Thanks for your reply Dan
It looks like pre and post 1987 but they do look like they interchange just have different part numbers

My Indie advised a replacement at the last service, and the Porsche price quoted was a lot more than your figures!! My car's always been sluggish turning over but aren't they all like that? I might ask about a refurb unit.
I looked at high torque/ geared aftermarket starters...always seemed a good idea, but reviews on the web site showed a lot of unhappy customers. Perhaps not then?
Stating the obvious, it's worth checking/fettling the earthing and also on here somewhere Waylander reckons that the localised cabling may be a problem and makes up a part loom replacement at a reasonable cost.

I recently fitted a 1.7kw refurbed Bosch unit on my turbo, to replace the standard 1.4kw one, it's spins really fast now coupled with a good new battery. However as the turbo engine is lower compression, you would expect that result.

Cheers all, will be going away in a few days so will tackle this issue when I'm back but my thing about some other serviceable items aswell. My even take my starter off and see if there is a company that can refurbish my original unit.

Probably your most cost effective option to have a local firm refurb yours. Be as good as new.

Had mine refurbed by autoelectrical firm in Bootle-main problem was the solenoid coil-fitted new one & rebuilt -now spins like a new clock £80 IIRC.
