New steering wheel required - Which one?...

..... however - I am unfortunate in that my car has marble grey seats etc. coupled with 'nachtblau' dash top / steering wheel etc. (the normal colour combination for a lot of midnight blue cars).

The problem is that unless you want black you simply can't buy any replacement steering wheels - I'd like a 3-spoker a la 996, but I don't think that the '996' blue is a good colour match (pretty sure it's called 'metropole') - Perhaps someone could confirm this?

Anybody have any ideas re. suppliers? - Gert can't get anything before you suggest him.

Chris

Metropole Blue is very, very dark. In fact if you looked at an item of trim in isolation it is easily confused with black. The usual giveaway is the stitching in the leather - this shows up as a defined blue colour. I think your nachtblau is also known as midnight blue, definitely a couple of shades lighter. I recommend that if possible you go somewhere with a metropole blue steering wheel for sale and offer it up to the interior of your car, that way you can see if it will compliment or contrast with what you've got already.

Does anybody know if the three spoke 996 / Boxter style wheel with airbag is an officially Porsche sanctioned fit for the 993? Calling Maurice.

it fits, and it works...

I know a few 993 owners who have upgraded....

Porsche sanction ? only if you buy it from them !

Sundeep,

I agree that the wheel fits but it's the airbag compatability that I would be concerned about. If the wheel is specific to a Boxter or 996 then the airbag will have been tailored for that vehicle rather than a 993.

One of the problems with my car when I went to look at it was the AirBag controller

The dealer obtained a replacement, but had a big problem getting it to work in the car, and ended up trying it in a 996 to get it working.

Eventually they needed to set the airbag controller to "Boxter" mode to get it to work (presumably via the OBD ?)

This would suggest that the airbag controller is a common item (PET?) although I have no intention of testing it to see if if goes off at the correct specifications...

Hi Maurice,

The reason for my interest is that as well as being a 993 owner I used to work as an Airbag Engineer. I can confirm that the Boxter / 996 airbag is not intended to deploy with side airbags. It may, however, be configured to work in conjunction with pyrotechnic seat belt pretensioners.

The main issue would be, as you suggested, the relationship between the steering wheel and the occupant as well as the rake of the windscreen. Also, there is no guarantee that the airbag would actually fire even if the electrical connections mate up correctly.

If the three spoke wheel is not listed as an official "fit" for the 993 then owners are making a lot of assumptions about the airbag comapatability.

I may be mistaken but didn't Ken Coad describe changing to a 3 spoke wheel in pp recently - anyone know what Ken did with the airbag / sensor ...?

Kevin

"Black" this and "black" that!? - Don't give me black, I need blue! [8|]

Seriously, I'll never by a car again unless it has a standard black interior - The parts simply aren't available []

Thanks for chiming in everyone.

Chris

I don't think a black one would look bad at all... maybe an interesting contrast. I suppose you could get the wheel retrimmed...

I upgraded my 993 wheel to a boxster 3 spoker. I got the wheel used from Porsch-Apart, who also supplied a brand new airbag. Total cost about £475 inc.

It was a bolt-on replacement, the airbag connectors simply clipped in. 10 mins tops to change over and looks and feels so much better. I hope not to test the airbag operation!

I understand it is important to have the ignition off (I unplugged the battery altogether for 20 mins beforehand) or the airbag warning light comes on and requires an OBD reset.

Hi,

Just seen these posts.

I have a 2s with what I'm reliably informed is chestnut brown interior (looks red to me). I'm looking for a new wheel too and cI agree: I certainly don't want a black one!

One of the main problems is the wear oaround the rim. I would even settle for a referb job, but the experts have told me that this would be unsuccessful.

So, if anyone finds a supplier that can match the trim I'd be very interested too.

Hi,

No as they're a long way from where I live in the north.

However, my children live there, so I might give them a call.

Cheers for this,

Chris
